I remember seeing a pile of discarded videodiscs in the alley in the opening 2015 scenes of BACK TO THE FUTURE II.

Yeah. I had a "Laser Disc player" in '89. They were album sized DVDs ( 12 inches as you said) with a resolution of about 425 lines vs a VCR of the day with about 100 less or so. They were 2 sided and of course you flipped it over. The top side had a label and side 2, 3 and four were marked as well. Usually a movie was a two disc set.

Laser Discs were different from Video Discs. These came out about 1980 and lasted maybe 2 years.

Who remembers Betamax?

This is as far back as I remember in terms of us having the technology at home.

I think this was before my era. I've seen a number of older karaoke machines that look like they use something very similar to that. Maybe someone can shed some light on that?

We had one. My dad was sure that Betamax was going to be "the" format so he bought the player/recorder and various tapes. He probably wasted quite a bit of money on all that

It's the only thing we have to record things on in our house. :/ Really need to get that sorted though as the quality is terrible so I usually just don't bother.

We had a VHS at one point. I don't know what happened to it. We've still got some of the tapes though.

I still have lots of VHS tapes, and two players (one is basically a backup at this point). I do try to replace my VHS movies if I find them on DVD in the bargain bin, because the quality is so much better. But I will likely keep using most of them until they wear out. I also like that DVDs take up less storage space.

I recall that we were led to believe the VHS tapes would only last about 10 years, but I have some that I'm sure are over 20 years old and still play. Some of the most used ones are wearing out or losing quality, though.

VHS is used a LOT here in this house. Who wants to buy a copy of "Mission Impossible" or "Jerry Maguire" for $10 at Wal-Mart on DVD or BluRay when you can save money and buy it for 50c or even 25c at your local thrift store on VHS? I have loads and loads of 1980s-2000s movies on tape, around 350 or so. Mainly action/thriller, some comedy, some horror. Even have loads of those home recorded tapes. I call them little time capsules. I have a tape with some old Cheers and Miami Vice episodes on them from around 1987, all with commercials. You will never see those shows again with the original commercials and promos from that era!

I actually started watching VHS tapes when I was around 2 or 3. I still remember I had loads of Blues Clues tapes, Elmo in Grouchland which I think I wore out (watched it every couple of weeks for a while), Little Mermaid II, Teletubbies, some old Tweety Bird shorts, and the one I watched the most - Toy Story 2. I have probably watched that tape 20 or more times. I LOVED Woody, Buzz and all the other toys. The THX Deep Note logo that played before the movie used to scare me a little when I was younger however. I still have that tape in my closet buried under the other 300+ tapes acquired in the last few years.

VHS tapes can last 30-40 years probably! I have a very old tape of the movie "Alien" with Tom Skeritt and Sigourney Weaver, a classic sci-fi film. The tape dates back to 1980 and still plays really well. That's almost 34 years and I wouldn't be surprised if it lasts longer.

Of course I remember the VHS. We got our first one when I was 9 in the mid 80's. It has long since been replaced by a DVD player and later a Blue-Ray in addition.

Pity, I always come across people who will talk about how bad the tapes were and that they were always breaking (the tape part got caught in the machine and was hard to get out of it), but of all the tapes we had I think there were only two that did. I kinda miss that technology to be honest. I liked the tapes and the rewinding.

But then I'm like the most nostalgic person there is.

I remember my family used to have a bunch of movies on VHS when I was around 2 or 3. On movie night, I got to turn on the TV and then my dad would help me set up the movie.
Whenever I watch something on tape now, it reminds me of family movie night from when I was little. :)
