I have cut my own hair for many years because I cant stand hairdressers.
My husband do it too for the same reason but for him its way easier as he has short hair.
Its a social nightmare to even enter such a place. The first thing they ask when you sit down is "what do you do for living?"...
I just cant stand it and I have social phobia.....

Now I want to perm my straight hair to be curly and I have browsed the net for many hours to find out how to do it myself.
Everywhere Im recommended to not do it myself but seeing a professional "because its risky and so much things can go wrong"

But nowhere someone is telling WHAT could possible go wrong!!
I just think if I do it carefully and follow the instructions properly then what can be wrong, if not loosing all my hair.
I can stand it looks messy and not exactly as I want it but Im not sure I can stand to approach a hairdresser...
I dont know a single soul who can help me out with this either, my husband cant do it

Anyone who have own experiences to share in this matter?
If not you can just share your view on hairdressers and how you deal with them...

I don't like hairdressers either, so I cut myself. Basically always with a shaving machine. But I'm a guy, so it's probably easier for me than you. I don't know any tips I could give you. Can you talk to your husband about these things? Does he understand?

I hate the hairdressers too! I had not been since I was 12 and got my mother to trim it about 1cm per year for the 11 years following that and left it as is, so it was about half way down my butt. Then I shaved it all off at the "Shave For a Cure" thing on a whim. A TV star shaved it off (no idea who it was though as I do not watch much TV) at a local event.

Since I have been bald I went to the hairdressers once and I hated it. So I get my boyfriend to cut the bottom of it now and again and I plan to regrow it back to the way it was. So I have gone back to avoiding them and that is how I deal with my hair :)

^Yes!

I use to get mine cut, but now don't think about it because so many of them have screwed it up before by getting it either too short or too blunt. I have trouble growing my hair out because it's so thick. I love all the styles but I don't want to risk getting all of it chopped off. Takes a while to grow back out. I know one girl that gets hers done for $200 and it looks good, but too expensive.

Anyway, I too have trouble in social situations but I think with hairdressers and doctors who are putting you their hands, you have to be very assertive. I had to learn to be that way when one girl was chopping my hair so short and wouldn't stop until I became more sound and let her know I was serious and meant business.

I also know some people ask around or have friends that do hair. Not easy I guess for some of us aspies lol. You just have to go around and ask people and do some connecting. LOL, I've come to the conclusion that going to a hair dresser like finding a good doctor.... :P

Kenjuudo: oh yeah, a shaving machine, thats what my husband use too. I didnt find the word for it, but thanks. He surely understand if I get to talk to him about this yes. He would never force me to go to a hairdresser if I dont want to because he knows how strongly we both dislike it

Thanks also Saspie and MissConstrue for your replies!

If emo is meant as in the original "emotional", then yes, sometimes. If it is the modern degoratory term used against goth people, then no.

Actually, I did get it at first, but wasn't sure if you meant that.

Let me rephrase: "I don't like hairdressers, so I usually stab myself in the throat with a bread knife instead."

Does this make more sense? :)

I am a male and I have cut my own hair for many years with the aid of a mirror.

But a few days ago I had too much to drink and I really gave myself a "short back and sides".

Oh well, it will look better in a few weeks.

My dad cuts my hair. He's really good at it though, which is fortunate.

I remember the last time I went to a proper hairdresser. I asked to have my hair thinned (it was quite thick because it hadn't been cut for a year or two at that time). Instead of thinning it, the hairdresser cut it into a fashion which made me look like an old woman.

Broken space bar? 8O

Anyway, I also hate going to the hairdressers. The hairdresser soon realises I don't do small talk and then it's awkward silence until my haircut is completed. Unless I want it properly cut, I usually just trim off any split ends myself.

I've fortunately never been to a hairdresser/barbor/whatever...my mom has always cut our hair growing up, a few times I've had friends do it, but now I mostly just do it myself (though for us males, it's always hard to find a style that doesn't look dumb while you're growing it out).
