It's pseudo-psychology self-helpish stuff. If you got some good tapes they'll run you through a course that'll teach you some basic perception skills in regard to situations, like "distancing yourself from the problem to get a better perspective" etc.
They really can help some people, although they're nothing magical, and they certainly won't solve any major problem/task. If you want to learn how to control the thoughts in your head I suggest that you take up some form of meditation, or reading.
