That happens to me sometimes. It's like our brain takes over as we wonder off into our own world. I call it being on "Auto-Pilot".....just do things automatically, like I get nervous when I'm going to the airport, even though I've done it a MILLION times, but I keep thinking I'll forget to do something, or go the wrong way, or not remember how to do something, but of course, everything turns out fine....it's my auto-pilot brain. LOL

You're taking in a lot of information all the time, what you perceive consciously is filtered, so you won't remember anyhting unless it's significant.

My family often mention me being on "Auto-Pilot" I'v never noticed it before.

Only a A/S brain would think that tomatos being in the vegetable section is signficant, but the warning sign your about to crash i to is not :)

I frequently have a problem finding the particular brand of item I'm looking for. I'm just in overload with all the varieties and colors and people rushing by and the awful background music....

Autopilot mode is common for me too. Sometimes I walk by familiar people at a distance of a few metres and do not notice them. But I do notice the most stupid jars on the shelves.

Even while driving car, my thoughts float away and I just drive. Even in high density traffic, this still works. Really strange.

My brain seems to split into two parts.

Totally relate! I've probably had something like that happen a dozen times.

I just read a paragraph from a book called Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman (1995) that seems to explain this phenomenon:

"In one of the most telling discoveries about emotions of the last decade, LeDoux's work revealed how the architecture of the brain gives the amygdala a privileged position as an emotional sentinel, able to hijack the brain. His research has shown that sensory signals from the eye or ear travel first in the brain to the thalamus, and then - across a single synapse - to the amygdala; a second signal from the thalamus is routed to the neocortex - the thinking brain. This branching allows the amygdala to begin to respond before the neocortex, which mulls information through several levels of brain circuits before it fully perceives and finally initiates its more finely tailored response."

My summary: you could call the amygdala the 'emotional brain' which works almost unconsciusly and operates faster than the conscious neocortex, 'thinking brain.'

Weird stuff have happened to me in the past. Like some days I will think of an episode of any TV Series, and then that night it will be on TV. And I remember once at the library, I was looking for a new SpongeBob book, so I went to one section (I didn't know it was there) and I found one immediately. It's like my brain knew where it would be without looking.

Some do say we actually don't use all of our brains, and maybe these weird senses are a part of the brain that we don't use.

How interesting. I tend to just bump into things and people because I don't pay enough attention.
