I was happily playing a video game by myself when little-brother-in-law entered the room and asked to join in as a second player. (I hate playing video-games with multiple human players.)

So I said, "No, but here, you can continue playing. :) " (I was tired of playing the game, anyways.) So I paused the game and handed him the controller and proceeded to return to my bedroom.

Then he got all upset and turned off the TV and the machine and stormed off to his room angrily.

Why did he get all mad? He could've played the game if he wanted to. And he would get to control it even more since he would've been the primary player! :?

Maybe it's because he wanted to play with someone, not by himself. Or because he wanted to spend time with you specifically.

Yeah, I agree. You probably hurt his feelings because you made him feel like you didn't want to play with him.

Oh, okay. I guess I seemed pretty mean there. Time to formulate an apology...

When I went to apologize to him, he seemed to have already forgotten!

It seems to bother you more than it does him...

He just turned twelve.

And it kinda does bother me because the last thing I want is to make someone feel like I hate them or that I'm deliberately being mean to them.

It's just than whenever there are multiple human players involved, they tend to get loud and it gives me headaches and I cannot concentrate on the game.

I tend to stay away from multiplayer games since I'm such a sore loser...

EDIT: And the fact that the only person I play games with is even more sore loser than myself is damn problematic...

Obviously he wanted to play with you. Even an Old Aspie such as I am can figure that out.

Two of my four children are NT so I have rather good practice in relating to NT young people. The third is bi-polar. The fourth will become an Old Aspie if he lives long enough. Unfortunately, on my side of the family bi-polar disorder is a lurking danger (it is based on a genetic tendency).

I like playing chess, but I specifically like playing against a person. I like seeing how different people's personalities come out in the game. I never play chess against a computer. What I love about chess is that I get to socialise without too much intensity, whilst simultaneously exercising my brain.

Recently a child watched as an adult friend and I played chess in a public place. I asked if she wanted to play too when we finished, and she nodded, and I played against her, and I loved it. She didn't say a word and she didn't make eye contact.

Her mother and father were nearby and I gave them number so that if they come back there they can give me a call if she wants me to meet her there to play.

I usually don't connect with children that well. I liked it.

Well, I played some video games with him today, ate some breakfast and watched TV with him as well.
Hopefully, he has received an adequate dose of attention and socialization to keep him satisfied for today.

And now I need an ibuprofen. Ugh... :(
