Can someone please explain why some people use 'am' instead of I'm' at the start of a sentence please.

This is a new one on me. Am not sure why people do this. :?

Thank you. :)

'Am' is a fast fowarded 'I am' in speech. 1 syllable instead of 2.

Them folks always looking for short cuts.

Some people with ASD have trouble with pronouns. I know I do, and I usually don't even notice it...so I've been trying to work on it.

Like sometimes I'll say "Saw that." instead of "I saw that.", and I guess it probably looks a bit funny sometimes to others.

Used as fast speech. Think you understand. :P

Or...could be what I used to do, the 1- 'I'd' wonder memo...;)

I used to be so wrapped up in the 'it's not about me', that I'd drop all the personal pronouns out of a memo, and include one 'I', for what ever reason.

I've probably used it myself in real life as I'm half Geordie but never really caught on that i was saying "am" and not "I'm" in real life. Strange. :)

Fast speech too, eh? I guess that just goes to show i do not use my mobile phone. I don't need to give you a reason why not on here, lol.

I've only seen one person do that. You mean in posts, right? Not IRL. I wanted to ask him why, but I haven't yet.

For some on the spectrum, the concept of 'self' is challenging - pronouns can be a huge obstacle. One of our members, whose posts are some of my favourites to discover here, uses "am" instead of self-identifiers... although I know she could explain the specifics of it better than I. Was strange, though, to discover as I was reading through my elementary school papers that my usage of 'am' was relatively similar and remains such if I am working in diary or journal context.

Am I? topic

As a rule, I do not use contractions, either in writing or speaking. Yoda-like?

I've noticed it quite a bit on these forums. It doesn't bother me really, but I've always wondered. Just assumed it was an accent.

Depends on use. If they say "Am I going to the store?" that's okay. If they say "Am going to the store." it means they're illiterate and need to study more.

I beg your pardon, but the correct phrase is "It depends on use". Which would indicate that you are illiterate and need to study more. :P
