I have always liked horror and monsters, be it books or movies. Included there is a liking for - among other things - vampire stories. As a westerner I grew up with the classical Dracula image.

When I first heard about the eastern European version, strigoi, I was very excited about it, especially what they call strigoi vii. The Romanian tradition about people being born strigoi, living vampires, is very interesting, I think.

I’d like to read more about this. So I’m wondering if anyone can recommend good books about strigoi? I’m mostly interested in folklore, but good fiction on the subject would be appreciated as well.
Good web sites and facts you might know about it would also be appreciated. If anyone here grew up with these stories, I'd love to hear from them.

I highly recommend the Guilemero del Toro/Chuck Hogan collaboration The Strain.

It takes classic vampire myths and flips them on their heads. No sparkly vamps here, either-these vampires are wild, unbridled, ferocious killing machines more akin to wild animals than the debonair aristocrats you might find in an Ann Rice novel.
It reads almost like a movie script in terms of character depiction and scene description and it's easy to be engrossed by it. :)

EDIT: here's the Wiki synopis if you're interested.

Thank you for your input, Shastania, this one seems interesting. I was already aware of this title and ordered it a week ago, along with Dan Simmon's Children of the night.

That trilogy site is great, by the way! I hope these books are as good as they seem!

Are anyone familiar with Graham Masterton's "Descendant" and / or "Manitou" series, and know if they're any good?
