they say walking is the best exercise for you.

That's a steamy stinky load. I just got home from a two and a half hour walk and according to an on-line "calories burned" calculator, I only burned about 1,500 calories.

Gimme my basal metabolic rate any day - just sitting on my butt all day doing nothing. I'd burn more calories that way

But it's more than just calories. Sitting on your arse doesn't improve your cardio. It doesn't exercise your heart and lungs and your major muscle groups. ;)

I love walking. It helps me think. I plug into my iPod and off I go. 8)

I consider my butt a major muscle group.

That's 8 freakin' miles of thinking.

A sedentiary person of average size burns around 1500 calories in a 24 hour period. You burned the same amount in 2.5 hours! That's huge. A workout where you burn 1500 calories is very very effective. Keep it up three times a week, and don't eat junk, and you'll see some real results.

DO NOT GIVE UP.

And don't you feel great? :lmao:

I get bored easily so I have to switch it up. I walk, jog, swim, cycle, salsa dance, pilates etc.. It all depends on my mood that day. It's usually one day of cardio, next day weights, and back and forth I go.

I don't have a car so I have to walk to get anywhere.

Except it's almost impossible the way everything is so spread out. I've even had to hitch for rides b/c of weather making it almost impossible.

I guess it depends on the person though. If you don't view it like a job you might enjoy it. I love to walk around the lake with music blasting through my headphones.

I have my own theory about another benefit of walking. It operates sort of like EMDR.

I've always been a walker and it never fails to make me feel good. I think it has something to do with alternate movement.

picture this:

very light rain, heavy wind, dead of night going out for a walk in rural Maine... Started at 11:30. Got home at 2

I tried making it to a famous general store which you may have seen the sign for;

...which is about 12 miles from my house.

I made it only 4 or so miles up. 8 total.

Did you know that fireflies live up to and possibly later than mid-September? Walking along, I could see them glowing on the side of the road on and off.

^ I've never seen that before. That's hilarious.

I love fireflies. We don't get them at my house but when I go to the cottage in the summer you can see them near the beach. My favourite thing to do is to just sit and watch them and listen to the water.

1500 calories is the daily intake of some diets; even on a relatively indulgent diet, that is half of what one consumes in a day burned at that time, w/o taking any other processes into account. I'd say that is pretty damn good exercise, plus the cardiovascular contribution to improving one's health.

....dude, 1500 calories is a lot of calories to burn off-I think the daily caloric intake is like 3-4000 calories or something....Plus when I was fat in high school I started taking two hour walks each day and I was at a normal weight two months later. Plus it makes you feel better, even if the walk is boring...and if one long walk is boring, try walking in circumstances you'd be driving, taking the elevator, taking the bus etc.
