My friend, who's been getting into pop psychology lately, showed me this test. He found it on a foreign language website, and translated it for me. It's similar to other tests of this kind, but it's different enough from others that I thought I'd share it with you. It's supposed to tell you about yourself. So, here goes. This post will have the questions. The next post will have the clues. Key words will be highlighted to tell you what exactly you're responding to.

1. You are walking through a forest. What kind of forest would it be? Which season is it? What is the weather? Are you alone or with someone? Who is the person?

2. You come out onto a clearing, and see a spring with water coming out of the ground. Will you approach the spring? Will you splash water on yourself? Will you drink for it?

3. As you walk farther, you see an animal. What animal is it? What is it doing when you see it? How do you interact with the animal?

4. Continuing on, you see a river in front of you? What does the river look like? How are you planning to get across?

5. Somehow, you made it to the other side, and you see a house. How does the house look? Do you feel like going inside? You decide to go up to the door. How does the door look? Next to the door, there is a sign. What's written on the sign?

6a. You decide to go in. Describe the first room you enter. Which room will you go to next? Describe that room. What other rooms are there? Describe them.
6b. You see stairs up to the attic. Will you go there? What does the attic look like? What do you find there?
6c. You see stairs going down to the cellar. Will you go there? What does the cellar look like? What do you find there?
6d. You come across a white room: it is painted all white, with no windows and nothing on the walls. When you went inside, the door closed behind you. How would you feel, and what would you do?

7. You come out of the back door, and walk along a path. In front of you is a high fence. How will you get past it?

8. As you walk along, you see a small dirt mount and a large burrow leading underground. How will you respond?

9. Finally, you reach an ocean and a beach at the shoreline. There are some seagulls flying over the sea. How many are there? Are they near or far? How are they acting?

10. You look out into the ocean and see a ship. What type of ship is it? How far is it from the shore? Are you planning to reach the ship, and how?

1. The forest is how you view your own life as a whole. If it looks pleasant, then you're probably well off; if not, then you have some difficulties. If you're walking with someone, you perceive them as your partner in life (doesn't have to be a romantic partner).

2. The spring represents your response to new things. The more you come in contact with it (from simply washing an object to actually drinking the water), the more optimistic you are. If you see a spring filled with garbage, you're probably a pessimist.

3. The animal represents the dangers you come across. Your interaction with the animal represents your reaction to those dangers.

4. The river represents the obstacles or life challenges you encounter, as well as your perceived size of them. Do you try to get around it by thinking creatively, or proceed headstrong by swimming across it? You're probably the same with actual challenges.

5. The house and your willingness to go inside represents your view of your home and/or family. Does it look inviting or ominous? You probably see your own home the same way. The door represents your feelings about being a part of your family: is it open, closed, locked, or boarded up? The writing on the sign indicates your unique role in the family. If a personal message is there, you feel like you have a role. If not, then you're probably simply "there".

6a. The first room you enter shows how you perceive your daily life in the family. If you don't see curtains, flowers, cozy furniture, or food, then you're probably unhappy. Other rooms you go to reflect your family life in a similar way.
6b. The attic represents your view of your school/academic knowledge. Think about how you react to the attic and the way it looks. Many young adults see messy-looking, dusty, and/or deserted attics.
6c. The cellar represents your view of your subconscious/life/social knowledge. Think about how you react to the attic and the way it looks. Oftentimes, people express particular anxiety at answering this question.
6d. The white room represents your view of death. Is it something you deeply fear, or accept as reality? Your reaction to this room reflects that.

7. The fence means the same as the river, and the answers reflect the same things.

8. The burrow reflects things your ability to overcome fears. The way you act around the burrow show how you act around things you are afraid of. Do you stop and check things out? Do you look inside and yell? Or do leave as quickly as possible?

9. The seagulls represent your relatives other than immediate family. Their distance, their actions, and the number of them represents the relationship you with to have with you non-immediate family.

10. The ship represents an ultimate dream. If you see a cruise ship, a pirate ship, or something like that, it means you hope for a wealth or excitement. Then again, if you see a broken or sinking ship, it is a sign of despair. Also, it's not a good sign if you see no means of reaching the ship, like no boat in sight and/or rough water (this is common in teenagers).

11. The test is broken, as it assumes that any imagery selected is not only symbolic, but symbolic in an NT's way of viewing the universe. For instance, to me an animal doesn't represent danger; animals are far safer, in my view, than people. Seeing a ship with no means of reaching it is simply working within the parameters presented by the question itself - you didn't say anything about there being any other boats around. And so on...

I realize that. But this test is mainly for entertainment and a little bit of insight; it's not meant to be a diagnostic tool. I'm sure many people will visualize these things based on those they've seen in real life. I used to enjoy similar types of tests as a kid. Also, some PUA literature vendors even suggest using these tests while picking up women, but I don't have the verbal skills to do that successfully. Well, here are my own answers to get things started. I hope it'll be fun.

1. Forest
It would be a mix of broadleaf and conifer forest. The ground is fully shaded, with some light penetrating through the canopy. It's late spring, partly sunny. I'm walking alone.

2. Spring
I'd dip my hands into the spring, and splash water on my face, hands, and other exposed body parts. Most likely, I would not drink from it (the water could be polluted), unless I was really thirsty and had no alternative.

3. Animal
It's a coyote. I see it eating a rabbit carcass. To be safe, I pick up a sharp stick from the ground. The coyote looks at me in a "what are you staring at?" kind of way, then proceeds to mind its own business. I keep walking.

4. River
The river is about 12 feet wide and 5 feet deep. I'll try to look for a bridge. If I can't find it, I'll look for a large tree I can knock down and use as a makeshift bridge. As a last resort, I'd swim across, while floating my clothes on a piece of driftwood.

5. House, Door, Sign
The house looks clean and presentable, but relatively small and plain. There is no welcome mat, but I feel somewhat safe going in. The door is closed but not locked (you need to turn the doorknob to open it), and it's a basic wooden door. The sign has the house number on it, and nothing else.

6a. First room, Next room, Other rooms
The first room I enter is a living room. It's quite spartan-looking, but feels comfortable enough to be in. Simple couches and a TV set are to my left. The next room I'd go to is a large kitchen/dining room combination. There is a table with plates, cups, and silverware, but no food. Other rooms I see are a bathroom, an office, and stairs leading to the bedrooms.
6b. Attic
I see a large, empty room. There is a small window with no coverings. Thick dust, cobwebs, and pieces of paper are everywhere. A few boxes are sitting in the far corner.
6c. Cellar
I see a dark, grungy room. There are no windows. Almost all available floor space is filled with boxes, crates, steel drums, old appliances, and large pieces of junk.
6d. White room
I'd feel trapped and creeped out. I'd try to open the door, to get out as quickly as I can.

7. Fence
I'd look for a gate to walk through, or a ladder I can use to climb over the fence. If I can't find one, I'd look for a loose board where I can break through the fence.

8. Burrow
I'd go up to the burrow to get a closer view. Then I'd lean in a little bit to check it out, but not put my face anywhere near the burrow entrance. Who knows what could be in there.

9. Seagulls
There are about eight seagulls. They're flying close enough to get a good look, but beyond arm's length. They're generally minding their own business.

10. Ship
It's an industrial container ship or oil tanker. (It probably means that I see my dreams as nothing out of the ordinary.) There is a motorboat on the shore, but I figure that it won't be fast enough to reach the ship and not bother with it.

1. One containing me, if I went there now, autumn, I am guessing alone, I'm not in the forest, depends on who is there.

2. If it caught my attention, any information relevant to how the hell I got in this forest would be useful. Given it was against my will to travel here I consider everything potentially unsafe, so no.

3. I don't know, I would observe the animal at a distance to determine if it is an animal and not an illusion

4. A river. I'd only try to get across if I felt it would bring me closer to escaping this place or leading to something of value. In the event it did. If it did I'd jump if it was narrow, use neaby materials if available, or wade if it was slow. Otherwise if neccessary I'd just walk down to a narrower area and cross.

5. Like a house. I'd probably feel like knowing what was inside, the door looks like a door. If something was written on the sign I'd read it, given I know the language.

6a. By this point I'd probably be trying to gather all my will to break the progress of whatever is making me do things I don't want to do in this alien environment. I enter this room, and presume I will go into an adjacent room given my course so far.
6b. I attempt to pull onto the banister and lash my clothes on it in an attempt to halt this journey. This inevitably fails and I ascend to an attic.
6c. I'm driven by some force toward walking down a set of stairs that lead directly from the attic to the basement. This illogical house layout, combined with the lack of evidence for a designer house, leads me to believe this is a dream or test of some sort.
6d. Given my previous deduction, I hope that this experience can end, maybe I'll wake up in front of my computer, nothing I remember before this experience leads me to believe I died or were poisoned.

7. Given I appear to be following this route, and nothing I do fails to lead to the next area, I decide to just walk straight through the fence.

8. I knew it! Ok, now I shout "arch", "exit" and begin pinching myself for my own amusement. This isn't going to work, ignore the burrow.

9. There are precisely double the number of gulls found when I count half of them. I double check this. Yep, definately that many, certainly more than 1. They are are between touching me and about a mile, I presume they are following the behavioural patterns of gulls found on Earth.

10. A seaship. Given I'm on the beach and not at a vantage point, the ship would be within 5 miles yet far out enough to not be touching the ground, and therefore in the ocean. The voices willing me to respond cease, and I breathe a sigh of relief.

1. It's an early foggy morning in late fall (even in the imaginary world I have to wake up ridiculously early). The forest is very quiet and filled mostly with pine trees. I'm by myself.

2. I'd approach it, wash my hands, and have a drink. The water is perfectly sanitary because it's an imaginary spring.

3. It's a baby deer, but it's old enough that its spots are mostly faded and it can wander on its own. It's eating a plant on the ground. It looks up at me when I walk by and holds very still until I'm past it.

4. It's cold and fast-moving, about 5-6 feet wide. I'd find a narrow spot and jump across.

5. A old, dark brown and black sort of Victorian-looking house, but small. I'm not scared of it but I don't really want to go in because it's not my house. The door is black and in good condition, and it has a shiny new gold door knocker. The sign has dream writing on it - there's something written, but no distinct words. It's in angular, shaky handwriting.

6a. A plain entryway (of course it's an entryway, the front door wouldn't lead into a bedroom or something) with polished wooden floors and beige walls. There's a black coatrack in the corner and a large mirror on the wall to my right. It looks suspiciously like the entryway in my old house.
b. Probably not; the last time I went into an attic I got bitten by a spider. Also, I'm trespassing. But if I did it would be small, dusty, and filled with old cardboard boxes.
c. Sure, but again with the trespassing. It's a very dusty wine cellar. (Jackpot!)
d. Is there furniture? If there was no furniture I'd think it was weird and leave the room. If there was furniture I'd be okay, but seeing as this is not my house I'd still leave.

7. The fence that popped into my imagination, conventiently enough, is a random section of fence that I can just walk around.

8. Walk past it. I'd give it some space in case something happens to jump out of it, and I'd glance in as I walked by.

9. Five. They're maybe 20 feet overhead. They're flying by, probably scanning for any potential food.

10. An ocean liner very far in the distance. I don't plan on trying to reach it. How would I get there? Why would I spend time and money chasing an ocean liner?
