For the past several months, I had been researching cities that would cater to my lifestyle, and where I could do outdoor activities.

The cities that best matched what I am looking for are:

1. Boston

Pros: Liberal, not too hot, not too cold, not sure about GIS/urban planning jobs
Cons: Very expensive

2. Minneapolis

Pros: Not very expensive, liberal, not sure about job availability
Cons: Harsh winters
Mixed feelings: even though we're still friends, a former girlfriend lives there.

3. Seattle

Pros and cons: same as Boston

4. Houston (my home town)

Pros: Plenty of jobs, cost of living is reasonable, is politically moderate, but generally tolerant
Cons: the Three H's (heat, humidity, and hurricanes)

5. Nashville

Pros: Cost of living is good, moderate but tolerant, not sure about job availability
Cons: None

Question is...which one would you be happiest living in?

:D

Nashville is hardly tolerant politically, and there's hardly any restaurants (I always end up driving outside of town to Cool Springs for any decent food). If you have bad allergies don't move there either. However, for outdoor activities Nashville, and Tennessee in general, it is a good place.

I'd say that Boston or Seattle are your best bets. I personally would move to Boston if I had to choose out of the two cities. The only reason why I'd choose Boston is because I don't like the mentality of people who live on the west coast. A lot of people in North America who live on the west coast in Canada and The States act like a bunch of hot-shots, while the further east you go, the more laid back and down-to-earth people seem to be.

Take a look at California or British Columbia, Canada. They are filled with phony hot-shots.

^Eh. Ya ever live here (in SoCal)? Even if you did, there's an underworld to all this phoniness, maybe you didn't see it. Take a public bus one of these days, you'll meet some real cats, especially later in the day. I don't blame you for missing the "real side." I just hate when people generalize about people from my area.

Hey Tim_Tex, what sort of outside activities do you like to do? Maybe that can help narrow it down. I'm feeling rather restless here in SoCal, and am watching this topic like a hawk right now.

It depends where in BC you go to, sure there are a lot of phonies on the west coast, the lower mainland is bad for that, its worse here in Calgary, its filled with millionaire oil executives, it sucks ass in this town. If I was to pick a Canadian city or town it would be Salmon Arm BC or Saskatoon Sask, Brandon is also a nice city, don't like Winnipeg, its to run down there, In Ontario maybe Toronto, or Ottawa, and in Quebec I would pick Montreal, it would be my top city to live in for Canada, in the maratimes Halifax NS and St Johns NFLD. I am not to sure about which citys in the States, maybe Houston, Tx, and they love BBQ there, next would be New Orleans La, good food and music, NYC because its so f*****g awesome, its the capital of the world.

Ah, I love it when Northern Hemispherites complain about heat...
Just as when Southern Hemispherites complain about cold...
The summer's and winter's of both are more extreme than the last!

Personally, if I had to live in an American city (if you had a choice, why would you?) I'd probably live in New York.
It's always getting attacked by aliens and monsters, so, hell, might be worth a laugh.

This thread was good, alot of info about citys here. And,
i realize that i have never thought about any of the things
Tim Tex takes into consideration, and i have moved over
10 times! :) doh i really should have planned better i
see after reading Tim Tex`s post, he makes sense. i just
picked up and left every time, landing at a almost random
place and took it from there :) now i know what i`ll do next
time, thanks Tim

What places in usa are the hottest and have the nicest weather
all year around by the way? curious...might move to usa one day
but have no idea where, has to be warm (hm.. i might have to
bribe someone or something to get in, you guys are so strict with
who you let come across your borders) hehe There`s probably a
place that has a record for being the warmest place you have over
there, thats where I`ll be at if anyone needs to reach me :)

I am very happy residing in Portland.

Pro: Very LGBT-friendly, very nice people, neighborhoods are quiet,
pedestrian-friendly, bike-friendly, liberal, not too hot, not too cold

Con: Anti-autism spectrum, too many yuppies & hipsters are invading
the city from California or Seattle, jobs are hard to find, expensive as heck

PS: SG, I know you are a yuppie/hipster!

You would love the Phoenix, AZ area. We're not just warm, we're HOT!! ! It's almost always over 100 degrees Farenheit in the summer and often it's over 110. One summer we got up to 122! 8O (Did you know airplanes can't fly when it's that hot? The air isn't dense enough to support their weight.) In the winter, it seldom gets below 40 degrees.

I too have looking at cities that are Autism Spectrum-friendly
and could accomodate new residents that have "quirks."

Washington DC

Pro: Autism Spectrum-friendly, liberal, US Capital, job availibity strong

Con: Expensive as heck

St. Louis

Pro: Not too expensive, very quiet, not too hot, not too cold

Con: Not sure about jobs

Atlanta

Pro: Same as St. Louis

Con: Not sure about jobs, harsh summers, racial tensions in police department

Louisville

Pro: Very open space, most of Kentucky is farmland, fluctuating costs of apartmets

Con: Harsh winters, not sure about jobs, anti-Autism Spectrum, conservative

Any other ideas, people?

If I could live anywhere in the US, it would be Chicago or Seattle.

In Europe, Barcalona, Rome and Athens would be favoured cities. I would also love to live in any of the smaller cities in France. Toulouse is awesome. It's great living in the EU.
