I know there are some other book freaks like me around here.. so I was wondering if anybody knew of any good sites for buying used books. I get them on amazon sometimes, but there it's hard to find books coming from the same seller, so the shipping usually ends up being more than the book itself.. so I'm wanting to find a good site for finding cheap used books where shipping can be combined. Anybody have any favorites?

SmeeBay is generally pretty good in that regard. You have a lot more opportunity to communicate with sellers and most of them are happy to combine postage costs where possible.

US website:
www.ebay.com

UK website:
www.ebay.co.uk

I find Amazon a good place to go. Options to buy New & Used... At least in my experience anyway

I usually use Amazon. I buy nearly everything first-hand, though, these days. I used to get a lot of second-hand books from the student market at university, if there's one near you it might be worth checking it out.

Online? Online, I buy used books from B&N (mostly because they take Paypal).

However, it costs less than a dollar for used books from Goodwill, Value Land, Rescued Treasures, yard sales, flea markets, etc. so that's where I get the bulk of my collection.

I usually buy used books from amazon but since shipping is so high I always check The Book Depository as well since it has free shipping worldwide and the prices are usually good. Not used, but I've found a few there that were cheaper than used on amazon.

There's also a fun little map thing that shows what books people all over the world are buying. It's an interesting little thing to have on a site and has made me aware of some new and interesting books.

I get most of my old books at the York Emporium. Most cities have at least one old book store that also
sells records and antiques. There is also an Australian outfit called Page After Page that carries old books
and paper.

Another resource are E-books or text or PDF files from the Project Gutenberg.

And for science and tech books of yesteryear:

I love books, and I buy a lot of used books at yard sales or thrift stores. You have to search through them until you find something you like but I've found several older first editions around.

Something that you might really like is BookMooch. It's a dot com website. I recommend it to everyone who loves books. It's a free book swap site. You register and then you list books that you have that you would give away. For every ten books you list, you get a point. For every point you can request a book from someone in your own country. You request it and they mail it to you and pay the postage. When someone requests one of your books you mail it to them and pay the postage. If it's in your country you get one point, if it's out of the country you get three points and it costs them two to request it from you. I actually got a book from BookMooch thats fairly rare and is worth about a grand. I didn't know that till much later, I just wanted the book.

It's totally free to join and the most I've paid in postage to send even overseas is ten bucks. The most in the USA is about three bucks. Go check it out, there are hundreds of thousands of books there.

Readers' Corner on Hillsborough St, in Raleigh, just across from NC State. Been there 30+ years, started browsing in '78...;)
