I have an upgrade disc, but I'm kind of afraid to use it.

Went to upgrade the firmware on my mp3 player the other day and it wiped the hard drive clean, including the OS, then crashed it and refuses to load the new firmware. This device is as essential to me as a pacemaker to a heart attack survivor and now I'm gonna have to replace it when I can't afford a new one.

I know technology races ahead, but it burns my cookies when I spend hundreds of dollars and the company that gladly accepted my money last year can no longer be bothered to support the device they sold me.

Anyhow, that and years of experience with Microsoft just make me a little jumpy about the upgrade. The buzz on 7 is positive so far - is it gonna be worth the risk?

thats sort of imposible, that a crash wiped your computers hard drive clean, it just dosent work like that, and you dont need to replace it, you just need to fix it. Maybe tell us what the problem is (in more detail, what pops up, what doesnt work) and someone will probably be able to help you fix it

I'm actually really impressed with 7.
I've been running the beta, then the RC since they appeared. (My laptop came pre-loaded with Vista and it was awful - I dual booted with Ubuntu so I could actually use the machine until the beta arrived. It's saying something when the beta is more stable and responsive than the RTM of the previous OS!)
There are some compatibility issues - my smartphone won't synch by cable anymore, but overall it's a pretty good thing if you've had the problems with Vista and want something that works.

I have been using 7, but I also used vista, and I cant really tell any difference in speed. 7 has some new fancy things that are nice to have (and others that are really annoying).
I am using Intel core i7 with 12 gigs of memory, and I cant tell a difference in speed between vista and 7, but I am sure if you were using a not so fast computer, then you might be able to tell a difference

Well, I hate vista with a burning passion, and as soon as school is out, I'm either gonna roll back to XP again or go with 7...

I had it on both my computers. Now it's just my desktop with Windows 7. I also have Ubuntu Karmic Koala on there. I had it on my laptop, but I am now Microsoft free on it.

I've been using Windows 7 for awhile now and I find it looks similar to Vista (except the taskbar) but does everything better. I'd recommend it to anyone who uses Vista and XP if their computer is good enough to run Windows 7.

I think I will wait for my next computer; that's a lot of money for the upgrade, though I do hate Vista so. My computer dual boots with Fedora 11.

I've been using the RTM for a while now (got it from MSDN:AA) and I think it's pretty good. You need a decent comp for it, but I think it's pretty good.

I didn't say a crash wiped a computer's hard drive.

I said a crashed FIRMWARE upgrade (from Creative firmware to Microsoft Playsforsure wiped the hard drive of an (Jukebox Zen Xtra) mp3 player clean. One Operating System replacing another, and if you don't think that's possible, go look at Creative's website, where they specifically tell you the upgrade will wipe your mp3 player's contents.

So it DOES work like that. JUST like that. Problem is, because the upgrade hung and crashed, it only wiped what had been there, but did not replace that with the new OS. Now neither Vista nor XP will recognize that the player is connected and load the upgraded OS. I'm not the only person who's had this problem, there are posted threads all over the net complaining about it, and a few success stories, but none of those solutions worked for me.

However, I did read last night that Win 7 should recognize the player when Vista and XP do not, so I'll try the upgrade to 7 and maybe that'll solve the problem with the Creative player. And next time I'll just buy an iPod.
