This is what gals had to wear during AAGPBL, back when we had professional baseball for women.

I want one of those. Maybe I will find a costume of one next year.

Can you imagine playing ball in that?

What happened to Benny and Joon? topic

What is with the baseball interest? I do not remember this from the movie, but then I have not watched it for many years.

They got boring. Dottie and Kit took over.
But now I have to deal with B&J and 74 expo Spokane stuff on my walls. I haven't taken them down yet but then I won't know where to put them. So they are still on the wall.

I've seen parts of it...all I remember is Tom Hanks getting furious that someone was crying...

Yeah, they were a lot more strict on what could and could not be shown back then. Pants were pretty risque for women in the 40s, and parts of the 50s even.

Not sure if he was furious so much as incredulous.

Anyway, those uniforms look pretty non-constrictive as far as playing baseball, although they might result in some embarrassment during foot-first slides... 8O

I think they're cute and I like the Rockford Peaches ones the best. When I first saw the movie, I thought it was weird they were playing ball and they were wearing dresses. In the movie, lot of the girls were protesting about it and Ira said "Girls, if you can't play ball in this, you can't play ball with us. There are 38 girls who are getting train tickets home. They would play in a bathing suit if I asked them to."

I wonder if women in real life had the same reaction and also protested when the league started. I never found that one out yet.

I would ask my mom were she still alive, but I doubt she'd approve even of women playing baseball in the first place--she loved baseball, but hated women. :?

I think those uniforms are quite cool, though they'd be hard to play in. 8)

At first I thought you were saying she played in the league and then I realized she didn't after I got through reading your post.

Mom became a projectionist at a local cinema during WWII (at about age 16). I learned all about carbon-arc lamps from her, and cue marks for reel changeovers. :D

No, there would have been no baseball during the war where she grew up, in a poor part of Ohio. My aunt was a "Rosie the Riveter", I think, and Dad served aboard an aircraft carrier. But again, I never learned much about those days from my parents, who believed that "Loose lips sink ships."

Or maybe they were trying to protect me from some greater harm--I don't know.

Sadly none of my grandmas played in the league. :( I have looked on the website.
