Hi all

I saw "The cat appreciation thread!! !!" and since I like horses a lot I wondered
what would happen with a "Horse Appreciation Thread!! !!".

I like horses very much. Because I live in Switzerland it's too expensive for me to
have my own, but I sure would like to. Who else here loves or even adores horses?
:-)

I love horses. When I was little I had an imaginary friend called Gaffal, who was a horse... people assumed I was pretending to ride him when they saw me clopping around whinnying. Actually, I was pretending to be him. Twice in my life I've been prevailed upon to sit upon an equine, (once a donkey, once a pony) and didn't like it. It seemed disrespectful. Again, when I was little, I was mocked by my family because I was anti horse racing. At one time everyone used to ask me which horse to bet on, because I so often picked a winner. But I remember the day I picked a horse called La n'araigh, and he fell and broke his leg. He was shot on the race course, and at that point I realised that though horses want to run, they don't want to be raced. It's not a popular position in an Irish farming family to be anti horse racing... I think some of my family have come round to my way of thinking, but it's been over thirty years.

I've worked with horses in the past, at animal rescue centres, and I've discovered that most people who "love" horses love the fact that they have control over them. This also goes for animal rightsy people, who all too often treat animals as objects rather than individuals.

Did you know that George Orwell was inspired to write Animal Farm after seeing a big cart horse suffering? The character Boxer was based on the idea of a strong and noble creature not realising how strong he actually was.

Well... I hope your thread gets some interest. :)

"My lovely horse,

running through the field.

Where are you going,

with your fetlocks blowing in the wind?

I want to shower you with sugar lumps,

and ride you over fences.

Polish your hooves every single day,

and bring you to the horse dentist.

My lovely horse,

you’re a pony no more.

Running around with a man on your back,

like a train in the night

like a train in the night..."

Hello mgran

I sent you a private message about your post yesterday, perhaps you've missed it?
Because I am VERY astonished to, for the first time, have found someone (a woman) who likes horses and seems to share my views and attitude towards horses EXACTLY, I might as well post excerpts of my message here. It really is amazing!

This is the second time that you reflect my very attitude towards horses!

SAME HERE!
I can't believe you're actually writing this! My goodness!
I *NEVER* met anyone who likes horses who feels this way!! !
Goodness, why is this so?
Do you know *anyone* who feels like you? Have you ever heard of anyone or perhaps even of an organization who sees this this way?
I certainly have not and it's robbing my life!
It's literally making me sick. I think I love horses and whenever I turn to others who say they love horses, they feel so different about this.
I think people, horse-back riders actually think a human being can ADD dignity to a horse by riding it.
NOT SO!
This is NOT possible. Even the VERY VERY VERY BEST, the PERFECT dressage rider, can NEVER add ANY dignity to a horse. Always only take away. The question is just how much.

I very much would like to know more about you, get to know you.

Dito. Same as above!! !
I can *NOT* believe you just said this!! ! This is outrageous! Outrageously beautiful!
I can't believe you share my opinion on this!! !
Have you taken a look at my texts on www.animaldignity.org?
I'd be curious to know what you think. Perhaps by private message.

I love horses. Though, I do love kitty cats much more. I've always wanted to own a horse, and learn to ride. But it was hard enough to get a dog, and then a cat. Big animals...out of the question.
