Has anyone ever kept a carton of milk well past its expiration date only to see how rotten it would get? If so, how long did you keep it and what did it smell/taste like?

I just now emptied a carton of milk that we kept for just over a week past its expiration date. It smelled awful. My little sister actually had the nerve to taste it. 8O

I go to great extremes to avoid food poisoning, so no.

I can't handle expired food.

I actually have a phobia of mold. I'd freak out and run out of the room if I saw a spot of mold. Living on my own is hard because I've gotta grow a pair and handle it myself because there's only me. So I try hard to use or dispose of anything on time.

I used to push food past it's date and eat it, just to see if I'd get sick. When I was 20 yrs old or so, and stupid.

I'm well aware of what spoiled milk tastes and smells like (by accidental purchases of bad products, not by choice!), so there's no thrill in that for me.

Now, I've got kids. I can't be keeping rotten food around. If it clumps, stinks, sticks, or cracks - I pitch it.

I kept two pieces of bread, wiped them both on the wall of the shower, ran a small amount of water on them and put them inside of a plastic container. I kept the container in a dark place. After a few days there were black spots, after a week, white. I'm eight weeks into the experiment and there is nothing but brown sludge, white gunk and black... growths.

I once kept milk out of the fridge in a warm room for 4 weeks untouched. Now - I would have gotten rid of it, but I was in a place where I had to stay for 4 weeks before being released.

I made the mistake of opening it as I could see that it was lumpy.

WARNING: If you see lumps in it - DO NOT OPEN!! ! For the love of GOD, don't do it. The smell is horrific. My brother opened one once after I told him not to. Now whenever he sees bad milk, he just gets rid without opening.

It has a gag-like reflex.

I once accidentally opened a carton of spoiled buttermilk. It was the worst stench I've ever smelled.

OH DEAR GOD NO....! ! 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O

That is the biggest mistake I have ever made and I felt really sick afterwards, so its a no no no and no... just throw the dawn thing away.

[edit] I was throwing up and everything on top of that and the milk was like 2 days past its expiry date. :eew:
Also i've learnt that I should read the expiry date before I start using...

My philosophy with food is:

When in doubt
Throw it out.
