I've just noticed - that I've been having a lot of trouble, moving my mouse, as I've been trying to avoid getting it on the mouse mat. Is that dumb? or what?

What? You don't want it on the mouse pad? Why don't you put away the pad then..? XD;; I don't think I understand correctly.

Optical mice work seem to work better on desks than on mouse pads.

yes, the typical mouse pad is horrible for using with optical mice, especially if you are using a laser or high precision mouse.
Thats why I use a SteelSeries glass mouse pad (I-2 ?). My mouse I am using is a logitech G500. I also have a Wacom Touch pad (different from the graphics pad), it has no need for a mouse pad :D

I've always hated mousepads.
