By "childish things" I mean an adult playing with lego by themselves or going on the slides at the park by themselves. As long as you don't "act irresponsibly", whats wrong with that? Why does our society not want to see adults playing with toys and other childish things?
I mean its just a form of entertainment right? A responsible adult can have a full-time job and be working on weekdays and on weekends they can do childish things.

This video prompted me to post this thread

I believe it may be one of those social expectations I've never really cared for, I do things because I enjoy it not because some pompous person decided one day it was or wasn't cool.

It's socially acceptable to collect toys because they are collectibles but it's a guilty pleasure to watch children shows.

This is why I want to have kids.

I used to want to have kids for this very reason. I remember the year I became too tall to use the Playlands and such at McDonalds, but I noticed if I had a child under a certain height, I would be allowed in. However, I really don't want kids, so I suppose I'll just have to become obscenely rich, and have someone build me my own network of tubes and spaces.

I play with legos, toys, and all of that. It's viewed as eccentricity by those whom I tell. I do go to the playgrounds and play for a few hours at a time, but since I don't like crowds or stimulation, I tend to avoid these settings when there are many . . . or any . . . children about. However, if I'm alone in the park and someone shows up with a child, I will not yield my swing. Nor adapt. I refuse to change my plans because someone had a kid and believes their offspring should be entitled. Volume is the best way to get me out (volume as in noise OR in quantity of individuals).

I see nothing wrong with it. You should not either.

I don't see anything wrong, with it. I find it quite charming. :)

nothing wrong with a bit of play. or even a lot of play. i am a big kid myself and [ONLY!! !] when nobody else is in sight, i have been known to slide down a public park slide and get on a swing set, swing and sing like a little boy, with a grin on my face - at least until angry homeowners glare out their windows at me. i can feel 'em lookin' at me. what a bunch of grouches! what's the matter with 'em? don't they wanna play also? nobody wants to play with me

People have weird stereotypical expectations of others. There are two forms of maturity also, which are incorrectly equivocated. Maturity can be emotional fortitude and having qualities like patience and the ability to wait in a line for more than five seconds without honking. The other form of "maturity" is basically that which some people expect to go along with the other, that is, not having fun or playing with toys because "toys are for little children".

There's also the opposite weirdness around too... parents which consider their 24 year old offspring to still be little children.

I'd play with you! :-)

I do my childish things mainly in private. I have a thing for colouring books. I've got to get me some legos now, you guys gave me the idea.

It's great having a young niece so I can follow her around on adventure playgrounds and stuff. But I'm not crazy enough to have my own kids just so I can do that more often.

Didn't some greek guy say that he hated both adults who were childish and children who were mature? :?

Didn't some Roman guy once say that he didn't consider a person to be free if they didn't spend some time doing nothing?

One of the reasons my "sister" and I were so close is because she, like I, never gave up playing. A lot of my friends seemed to grow out of wanting to play, but she was always willing to do something fun and silly and not worry what people thought. (We also used to run around her family's yard naked in nighttime thunderstorms; kinda miss that.) These days a lot of my playtime is spent gaming, but I am known to hit the playground and swing for long periods of time in the spring and summer. It's soothing.

I like to play with toys, go on swings in parks and watch kids shows (Ben10, Storm Hawks, Pingu  ) I don't see anything wrong with it myself. If I saw another adult doing the same thing I would just not care. I am more confused why adults don't ever have fun!
