On another forum I'm a member of, I started a thread about my having Asperger's and what Asperger's was. I got a couple "yeah, what's your point?" replies and a few snarky, sarcastic ones; but there were also a few replies from people who seemed to genuinely (although maybe awkwardly) care.

I'm starting to think maybe this was a bad idea, because people on that forum seem to think of it as kind of a pointless thread. But then again, not many people have replied. What do you think?

It's the internet, there's always going to be some scrutiny and wisecracks. I say it was a good idea. Getting used to saying it on low risk avenues like a forum can only help you in the long run. If they're all as*holes about it, you can just find another forum and not have to deal with it. Or even just make a new account if you don't want to abandon the forum totally.

If you have a high post count there, I bet most people have read it but simply don't have much to say or don't know what asperger's is.

Most NTs don't understand what Asperger's is or how it works anyway. No matter how well explained.

Depends on the forum. If it's like WP, you should be fine. If its more of a 4-chan, expect to get trolled the f**k out.

I'm just saying. The Internet can be a really hateful place sometimes, mostly because you can't beat somebody with a hiking stick over an anonymous network connection. A lot of people on 4-chan wouldn't dare say half of what they b***h about there in real life, but since they have the power of anonymity on the net, they think they're safe.

Usually these are the people who are most outraged at the government's attempts to do away with internet privacy, because that will totally screw them over. And while I still say internet privacy is a good thing, it's also a double-edged sword for this reason.

They probably don't care and don't see why it's important for you to announce it. They may have thought you did it for attention.

There's less snarky replies now and more serious ones. I guess I really just needed to give it time for more serious responses.

For a minute there, though, I almost lost my faith in humanity.

This reminds me of the thread about ignorance vs selfishness. Maybe they're too selfish to care.

On the internet. I would say probably a bad idea. Anonymity makes the inner as*hole emerge.

IRL. People are weenies and could also see you so it is probably a better idea IRL than on the internet. Bad on a job interview, though.

I've had that happen on some boards.

At first I was angry but I don't take it as personal as I use to since I didn't even know what it was....

Some forums remind me of those stupid parties you go to where everyone knows eachother more than they know you. And when they do try to get to know you, you try so hard to keep their attention and explain through the burden of pauses and jumble of words. That's at least been my experience -_-

Then there's the boards where people take advantage of eachother. Probably not a great idea to say anything that reveals vulnerability with as*holes around.

I'm starting to think it was a bad idea. In the comment section of my profile on that website, one of the members posted a picture that displays a person with Asperger's in a manner that makes him look mentally ret*d, and the caption on the picture was something like "it's not my fault, it's the ass burgers". I took the picture off my profile and reported him for harassment.

I wouldn't come out, on a regular forum. I'd have a suspicious feeling, that the other members would call me ret*d, behind my back. I don't or can't always post the most intelligent posts. That would hurt me, very deeply, to the point of crying.

I did once, on a forum i was regularly on. But there was cool folk there, no one said anything disrespectful. Understanding, actually. I only came 0ut about it because I said a lot of stupid, offensive stuff there as a result of my staying up late and due to being sleep deprived getin g a bit hyper and saying stome stupid sh**.

A girl who posted there who I had a bit of a crush on even said that she once was tested for AS. She's quite Aspie-ish, indeed, and although i liked her for a few reasons, (her quirkiness combined with her musical talent and looks), it was neat to see this reply of hers.

I once started a thread on another board I am on, on what other boards than the Marvel comics one (which was where I posted it) the other users posted and I wrote in my thread where I posted too, specifying that one of those forums was an AS one. The thread was soon locked and removed due to some reasons (not connected with myself) but later one user sent me a private message asking if all aspies behave like an aspie in some TV show, he wanted to know if that actor played their role realistically (I couldn't answer this question because I didn't watch it though).

I don't know if I would ever "come out" about this on a Forum, because I believe it's not very relevant information on most places.

What was the point of making the thread there?

I never, ever post anything like this on the net unless its on a proven asperger or add friendly forum or if I specifically need to mention it to explain a postion or an argument I am taking.

No NT, I repeat no NT is ever going to understand. It is simply a different world to them. Its like trying to explain colours to a 100% colour blind person.
