I liked Freakonomics.

It used economics models to look at social phenomenom. The results where interesting. Sometimes obvious, and sometimes downright strange.

I'll second that!! Freakonomics was a thought provoking book and an interesting read.

The only true crime book that comes to mind is "The Informant" It's not gritty, but it's a frightening look at global corporate corruption.
