i'm fascinated by regional differences in vocabulary.

here's a map of the U.S. color coded by what term you use - soda, pop, or coke
(how do people in the south order a coca-cola??)

where are you from and what do you say?

soda or pop or coke?

sneakers or tennis shoes? (another one that baffles me - how do people that call athletic shoes "tennis shoes" shop for shoes to play tennis in?? or if they want basketball shoes do they say "basketball tennis shoes"??)

sub or grinder?

tag sale or yard sale or garage sale?

dinner or supper?

'quarter til five' or 'quarter of five' or 4:45?

I live in Texas - in other words, I'm from the South.



I'll say "coke" in reference to a Coca-Cola, because it's easier to say. I usually call other beverages by their full name.



I call them "tennis shoes" because that's what my parents call them, so that's how I'm used to saying it. When my dad says it, it sounds like he's saying "tenny shoes."



I don't know what that's a reference to.



I usually say "yard sale" because it's easier for me to say than "garage sale."



I actually use both terms interchangeably, but I usually say "dinner."



I just say "4:45."

Pop

I grew up drinking "pop", then switched to "soda" after somebody out East laughed at me about that, and now I call my Coke "soda" because CocaCola does not pay me to advertise for them.

Never "sneakers".

dinner or supper?
Just like with "soda", I have made the switch to "dinner".

'quarter til five' or 'quarter of five' or 4:45?
"Quarter tuh five".

I'm in the south(Louisiana) & we use the word Soda when we are taking about a group of drinks but we use the word Coke when we are talking about a specific one & we use the word Pepsi when we are talking about Coke's competitor but Pepsi isn't very popular here. We also use the word Coke in reference to a certain drug as well. The word Pop is used to describe sudden force-full action like "I'll pop you in the knee-cap" or "I'll pop you upside the head".

We call em Shoes here.

Yard-sale~ more people have yards than garages.

The word Dinner here is used to describe most any big meal but Supper is used to describe a specific one.

I say 4;45 but some here say "Quarter to five"

a.k.a. submarine sandwich, like you would get at Subway

Could they not have provided a larger map?

I say soda. It would seem pop is the most common here, however. I don't like the word pop. And referring to it as coke is like calling a tissue a Kleenex. It's not very accurate. Soda is just soda.

Some how Larger Than Life popped in my head as well.

Oh er....we say soda 'round heres in NOLA. Not too sure if i here people saying Cola a lot around here.

Also we say neutral ground, parish, etc.

In the Navy, the "grinder" is the tarmac where you stand "sub" watch when you mess up.

We say Coke to refer to any soda.

Texas borders Mexico, and some people will order a "Coca".

That's a cool map Katz! I was born and lived in Indiana and Arizona but I traveled a whole lot as a child. I grew up saying Coke and pop both also tennis shoes, sub, garage sale, dinner and supper both, quarter til five. As kids, me and my sisters would compare common things like this, that had more than one name, with other kids from different places in the US and Canada.

Ha Ha that's funny, I grew up saying Kleenex for a tissue. I still say it most of the time. Accurate or not, everyone knows what I'm talking about when I say it.

Pop is used in Canada, soda is like club soda, or going for a soda which means go for a beer ehh
