Our society is totally obsessed with being entertained and it is only getting worse. Frick, even hanna montanna plays an entertainer in her show.

People will let their life fall apart around them just to ensure complete entertainment. Where would we be morally if we didn't have tv or movies? Kids are encouraged to play professional sports, dance, sing....doesn't anyone want to do any work? There are people starving around the world and all we can think about it american idol.

I believe there is a serious bubble developing that is not only weakening our society, but also poisoning our souls. I don't know how many people I know who their only socializing consists of talking about prefered entertainment, people on a large scale need to do some serious self reflection and develop a self or we are all in for some tough times.

I agree with this statement and feel your frustration. I often find it hard to discuss anything of real importance with people before realizing they just dont care, be it politics, religion, philosophy, etc.. All people seem to care about is mindless tv shows and sports and being endlessly entertained. I also agree that people will do anything, no matter how absurd, to not face their true selves, what they've become. This is why the world is in the state it's in and there are no signs of it slowing down anytime soon, short of some disaster that'll shock ppl to accept whatever solution's being thrown at them by the controllers, so long as they get to keep their SUV's and large screen TV's..

We're a society with a serious bug in it's operating system and it's time to call the techs.

I feel that the trend needs to slow down, a fair amount. It's gone too far, since the infancy of MTV.

It's called social engineering. And unfortunately I am as much a guinea pig as most others. We are basically consenting to be programmed by people who have a say in what they want us to believe, how they want us to act, and what type of personality they want us to adopt. This goes pretty much for all media especially television and is a huge source of moral decline in the world today. Basically these people want to make us believe, that the lifestyle they present to us, is only possible if we adopt certain trends which is only possible if we become consumers - consumers of worthless junk usually, but that which we are lead to believe will make us happy or successful.

The World Cup recently held in my country made me realize this even more. It's really just a deception. Anyone who was willing to be hypnotized by the constant "it's a celebration", "it's a once in a lifetime" and "it means everything" slogans only realized after the World Cup, that indeed it was just football being played, and that we will forget about it when the new club seasons start, and that the country has gone into real debt which during the World Cup we were never told of. This money would have proved to be better spent on the poor, which there are many in my country.

I think the News media is as big a culprit as any. Not only is Western news biased and full of propaganda, it also never sheds light on real issues like poverty, AIDS, lack of education and the perils of the poor. Instead we get bombarded with sports news which is sponsored by mega companies, wanting us to buy things, and we get bombarded with business and general news also sponsored by companies wanting to make a fast buck.

That's rubbish. People need to work to pay for the entertainment, for one thing, and for another, people have always craved entertainment in one form or another.

has there always been swarms of thousands of tweens who obsess over idols all day, attend dance, band, ballet, sports classes, and are bombarded with consumerist and sexual imagery constantly. People used to interact for entertainment, now it is force fed through flat screen.

Of course entertainment is important, but it alone is not for me at least what defines a person

Yes, there has. It's in the media because people - teenagers or otherwise - like it. Not the other way around.

Even cavemen had sexual items and imagery. This isn't a new development at all.
