I don't know if it's popular in other countries but in Poland it's very liked. Do you happen to pick mushrooms? I did use to do it when I was younger but I know only two kinds of edible mushrooms because those were the only mushrooms growing in the place my grandma lived in (it was she with whom I went to do it as a young child and even later; I never went for mushrooms alone; it somehow didn't seem appropriate to do it on my own, without her, let alone that it would be boring to do it alone, without those shivers of excitement when I saw a mushroom - "Oh, look, gran, mushrooms!"). In Poland there were several famous cases of kids who died of mushroom poisoning this fall though; the most famous one was the case of Tomek, a boy of 6 who had to get a liver transplant. The whole country followed his fight for life.

Yeah, I do. I like parasols, ink caps, fairy ring champignon, oyster mushrooms and puffballs. This is the biggest puffball I found;

Thanks for the excuse to wheel that one out.

The common edible mushrooms are fairly well identifiable, and the very deadly poisonous ones are easy to learn. But If in doubt, don't eat it! Though I sometimes eat stuff without knowing what it is. I believe I have an instinct for edibles, but maybe I'm just crazy.

We have a bunch in our yard sometimes, but I think they are not edible. It makes me sad because they smell so good and I love mushrooms!

Did you cook it and eat it? I've only had puffball once and it was really good. I know you have to cook them very soon after picking, otherwise they break down and liquefy. :?:

I'm curious with one of that size whether you would have even had enough time to cook it all before that happened.

We have some here to & I've heard that people need to be careful about picking em because the majority of mushrooms are NOT edible. I doubt the trippy kind grows around here. I want to grow the kind that makes me taller so I can jump on turtles :lol: Can some pigs be trained to find mushrooms or is that only for truffles & what's the difference between a mushroom & a truffle :?:

I've always loved mushrooms, but have never picked them--largely because I've never been confident in my ability to know which are and are not edible. I like to take pictures of them, though.

I think mushroom picking is something people do everywhere.

My Italian parents picked them in Italy, my Maori husband picked them in New Zealand, My Aussie mates pick them around here, my sister lives in England and they pick mushrooms too...

I love mushrooms!...not for trippin' though ladies and gentlemen :wink:

...but I only pick them from the store...it's just too risky picking the wild ones...in my opinion.

I go to the forest with my family, but I don't enjoy picking mushrooms. I walk through the forest and I play with my dog or I pick a stick and play. I often stim in the forest. I pick a mushroom if it's big enough to see it. I don't eat these mushrooms, I like only agaricus from the shop.

I go hunting for morrels every spring. I'll pick an occasional chicken of the woods if I see them.

For some reason I think it's really cute that Polish people enjoy picking mushrooms. :) My favorite kind of mushrooms are portobellas. They taste delicious plain, but they are even better with melted cheese inside the caps.

Also, I feel I should mention that there are are a ton of mushrooms growing in the park outside my house. I dare not pick them because I do not want to be poisoned.

I knew someone who would walk through forests and eat any mushroom he saw, claiming they were all 'magic'.

But some other Poles who don't fancy this custom, claim it's a habit of the poor, not practised in other, more developed countries, laughing at those who do it (I very often see such an approach on boards).
