So I was on the facebook with this grammar debate. I'm not going to tell you where I stood on it, but I will say I tried to research the rules with it, and I couldn't find anything on the web, in my Simon and Schuster Handbook, or in the APA manual. Maybe I missed it, but I'd really like all your opinions on this...

Most cities are named after someone. Like you got lastnameburg, lastnameton, lastnameville, etc. So when the city is more like a Lastname Town or Lastname Bottom, do you give it possession? And then what about (the main subject of my debate) cities that remove the town/burg/ville/etc. So in my example of debate was St. Marys. Is it St. Marys, or St. Mary's. If you google it, most towns will use both ways, like it just depends on the source, but it seems the USPS removes the apostrophe for whatever reason. But if you think about it, if a city was named after the one and only virgin Mary, then the apostrophe would seem correct right?

Anyway, what's your opinion? Do you give the name possession or remove it? St. Marys or St. Mary's. And St. Marys City or St. Mary's City

Here's a Wikipedia page on all the "St. Marys" of the world. How it is punctuated seems to depend on the area. Hope this helps.
