Does anyone else rigorously hate this stuff?
Why do they have to put it in all the cakes?

I just bought this cake which looked real nice, the writing was so small on the wrapping I took a chance on this Irish Whiskey Cake. The first slice I found the dreaded candied peel but luckily it was sparingly used throughout the cake and so I can detect and remove any peel. I mean, it's the reason I don't eat Christmas cake or Mince Pies, maybe candied peel is popular but it makes me feel physically sick even if I just get too close to it.

I spent a lifetime wondering this, and only twigged last year.
While to me, things like candied peel are akin to adding twigs to food,
to an NT, it enhances and adds to the cake eating experience.

In the same way that they like talking to five people at once, and an aspie likes talking to one person, it's the same with food. They're not monogamous, not even with food!

It makes me want to barf. It's typical stuff in Christmas fruit cakes. An occasional raisin or walnut would make a much nicer product. I think they use it mostly for color and decoration. Because if it were used for flavor, they wouldn't bother coloring it so much. The flavor is NASTY. I tried a piece by itself...DISGUSTING. It has been used for eons. Fruit cake used to give me HORRIBLE headaches as a kid. Now, a slice would probably just give me a damned stroke. I remember an employer giving them out to everybody with a big jackass grin on his face. Nobody really liked them except for maybe one person. I left it at the train station on a bench. A homeless man ate it. The next morning there was vomit all over the station. Some other passenger commented that someone must have eaten a little too much Christmas cake due to the bits of candied peel almost everywhere...even on the walls.

I agree about fruit cakes being GROSS. And the runner up, is mincemeat pie. UGH!

I didn't assimilate this exactly. But could it be an Aspie thing? Because that's exactly how I see and feel the candied peel, it doesn't even feel right, you know, like it shouldn't be there?

You guys do know candied fruit is drenched in high fructose corn syrup, FD&C Red 40, Yellow 6 and sulfites, right? all nasty stuff.

I know what you mean. Why mix up strange things in a perfectly nice bit of cake?


The only thing that might be vaguely logical about it is that the more foods you mix up, the better chance you get of getting the best value (energy, vitamins, etc) out of the foodstuffs. For instance, if you eat kidney beans with rice, you get more energy out of them than eating them at different meals.

But back to the subject, taste-wise, they should just leave the things out of the cake, and leave the cake alone!

Yes! Don't fix it if it ain't broken.

Luckily there are very few pieces of peel and the cake is very nice. Also, which would help a lot, they should write in larger print of the ingredients on the packaging, some of it is so minute you need a magnifying glass!
