Any aspies into cars?
I own and maintain two Mercedes-Benz autos. The first is a 1977 240D, with a naturally aspirated, four cylinder diesel engine with 221,000 miles. The other is a 1992 300E 2.6, with a naturally aspirated, six cylinder engine with 272,000 miles.
Anybody else into cars? American, German, Japanese, Korean, doesn't matter.

There's only one car that I'm passionate about, and that is the Volkswagen Beetle. I've seen some pretty nice ones here in Boise. I need to remember to take my camera with me when I go places so that I can take pictures of them. I want to start a collection of Volkswagen pics that I take myself.
IdahoRose,
The "people car" is epic. I love the Beetle as well. Anything engineered by Dr. Porsche has to be good. I had a neighbor for a few years that was into Volkswagen Buses, so we would talk about the Beetle, but he never had one here to look at. I bet they would make for a stunning photographic subject.

I remember when Nissan was Datsun ... I have been around too long. The Maxima is my favorite Nissan because it is a functional four door, but has kick ass performance.

The Nova is a great car. My uncle had a '74 nova, but it was a straight six. I had a Nova, but it was the Toyota/Chevrolet hybrid in the mid 80's. Not really a Nova in the truest sense of the word.

My only car is actually a 1994 Nissan Maxima GXE. Not my favorite car in the world but it has practically zero blindspots, gets me 35mpg+ on the interstate, and manages to kill a lot of smaller cars at least off the line, while carrying 4 people of an average height of 6'0" in comfort.
I have a reputation for treating it like a truck too...I just towed my dad's Pathfinder with it tonight.

I just love the Beetle's compact, round design. It reminds me of a ladybug. Every time I happen to see one that's vintage or with a unique paint job, I fall in love with it and feel sad when it drives away. I really wish I could drive so I could own one, but that would be unsafe for me. That's why I just want to take pictures of them.

Well that makes two of us who have not driven one. I think the pictures are a wonderful idea. You can see some images of the very first series of Beetles to come out in prewar Germany and then right after the war. But I really fell in love with the look of the car when I watched the Disney movie "The Love Bug" as a kid. Herbie was one of a kind. Oh, when I lived in California I saw a completely tie dyed themed Beetle. It was quite the sight and very unique.
Do you have a condition that prevents you from driving?

I'm a bit of a auto fan, but I lack the money to have any really cool or fun car.
I have a 06' TDI New Beetle. (I know, I know, it's kind of feminine and behind the the times but it has a good engine and great mileage. I can be sporty with it when I want to.)
I like going to auto shows. Around where I live there tends to be lots of antique auto shows but I'll occasionally make it to one of the big auto shows in DC.

Hey, the TDI is a great engine, snappy performance, and miserly on the diesel. I have heard the same thing from others that the New Beetle is feminine, but I don't know. It seems to be a pretty handsome care and at least you don't have to put a flower in the bud holder or what ever they call it. Plus, diesel engines are more efficient, better built and last longer than their gasoline counterparts.

There's no specific condition that prevents me from driving per se, but I am extremely oblivious to my surroundings, I get lost easily and I freak out if I think another car is going to hit me. Might be a depth perception problem actually. Anyway, driving just isn't a good idea for me. I don't mind though, because there's really nowhere interesting to go anyway. Besides, if I need to buy something, I just go online and get it.
That's a stupid generalization. Just because there are quite a few diesels out of there that will run for 300-1000K miles doesn't mean they all will or they are all that well put together or that gas engines can't be built like that. Nissan KAs, Nissan VGs, Nissan VQs, Ford small blocks, Ford straight sixs, Volvos, Ford "Pinto" OHC I4s, etc. are just a few of the engines I know of that can go head to head with a diesel in terms of reliability.

Your absolutely right, anything you need you can get online these days. My Dad used to teach drivers education for years and I know that driving, for whatever reason, is not for everybody. Where I live in Washington there is NO place interesting to go, unless you want to drive outside of town and watch the winter wheat start growing or farmers tilling fields. But, hey, the rent is cheap!

It certainly isn't a feminine engine. VW has great TDI engines. I'm trying to get it up to the 50 mile a gallon mark. In my city driving I usually make about 45 to the gallon, but I'll have a long distance trip coming up that i might be able to hit the 50 mpg mark on. (Provided the extra weight I'll have won't drag it down too much). It's too bad diesel is often overlooked in the states. It's still a popular option in Europe and they have better diesel there.
I'd upgrade to a Golf 6 TDI if I could, but they are still quite pricey.
