if you had a choice between an apartment where cockroaches roam the ceiling and walls in dozens, and you only get bread and butter and soup because of lack of money, but it's your own apartment and you can get out anytime you want.

Or a closed shelter where people hide, run by social workers who agree to take you in because of your low income situation (you're not in danger and there's no one waiting for you outside), you can walk inside the building any time you want, but you cant go out because you might unwillingly lead the bad guys to the shelter, and the building is really small so you cant walk around that much. you get food out of the refrigerator in the kitchen when you want and visit others in their rooms.

the situation is for ten days either way. in ten days you'll get paid and can leave either the shelter or the apartment.

but for ten days, which would you take?

Well, this might be just me, but I'd take the apartment, however bad.

That's because I value my own privacy, solitude and autonomy very highly, and I don't like situations where I have to live with others and adapt to group needs and rules.

So I'd take the horrible apartment because at least it's "all mine" and I can be left alone to live as I wish.

That's me but it might not be the right option for everyone.

The apartment. I could leave anytime I wanted, there would be no crazies and otherwise dangerous people as there would be in the shelter, and I'd have privacy and more living space.

^ As above. Besides, cockroaches spread no disease. They are virtually harmless.

I'll admit: roaches do annoy me, but as a Jain, I would never kill one. In that regard I'd rather take the closed shelter because privacy is not such a big issue for me anyway.

I would never willingly exist with cockroaches. They are not afraid to crawl over you at night. They most definitely spread diseases! Food, cleanliness, safety - its a clear choice.

World Health Organization (WHO)
http://www.who.int/water_sanitation_hea ... 8to301.pdf

They are proven or suspected carriers of the organisms causing:
— diarrhoea
— dysentery
— cholera
— leprosy
— plague
— typhoid fever
— viral diseases such as poliomyelitis

yes, that's polio!
I dearly love my privacy and need alone time but I would stay in the safer, cleaner shelter for ten days.

F U C K COCKROACHES.

I'll take the closed shelter. I can deal with it for 10 days.

The shelter--I'm more likely to have anxiety issues with the roaches than with a lack of privacy.

Shelter. I don't go outside that much anyway and I suppose noone would force me to go out from my room and socialize with other residents more than necessary. Even if the rooms were shared I believe there would be at least some time when all my roommates were out in kitchen or other people rooms and if not I would still be fine with them as long as they wouldn't talk to me and just let me read.

Cockroaches are disgusting and I really wouldn't like to find any of them in my bed when I sleep or step on them as I walk.

There doesn't seem to be a privacy issue in the shelter. Not being able to go out freely wouldn't be a big problem, either, if it's only for 10 days. So I'd take the shelter. I wouldn't be able to tolerate cockroaches.

I'd take the shelter because it be good for me to be forced to be around others & socialize some.

Apartment. Too many bad experiences with social workers.

I'd take the apartment and live with the cockroaches. I've always loved insects, anyways.

Haha, I kind of feel the same - I was going to joke around in my post "I like animals and will probably give them names and talk to them....!" !
