I thought we could get this word out of our language. Hell, even saying it should make you feel dirty. But, man those pilgrims were racist. Exhibit:

That's Plymouth,MA It's on Map 92 in the Meg Maps Cape Cod Atlas. I doubt Meg Maps even exists anymore, but still, I mean the official name of the pond is Negro Pond according to the USGS.

That doesn't really surprise me because the N-word was an acceptable word for a surprisingly long time in the English language and was even used as a brand name for household items. For example, there used to be a brand of soap called N-word soap. You can Google it if you don't believe me.

It makes me sad to think that racial equality in America became the norm only within the last couple of decades.

Yeah and? Like it or not, it's part of our history and it will show up in older documents. try to just keep it in that historical context. If the official name is Negro Pond, it's hard to tell if it's just taken from the Spanish word for black or it had something to do with imported African slaves. Yeah, teh Pilgrims were bigots. Most English and other European people of that time were.

In Ireland homosexuality is basically regarded as a normal variation (by most, anyway), although there are a few legal issues. Most people I know are voting for David Norris, an openly gay presidential candidate. Transsexuals, however, seem to be regarded as the scum of the earth. I think the words originally meant something else than they do now. I don't see where the pilgrims landed on Fraggle rock on that map :lol:
