well, new to us.

It's a 2005 Ford 500. I love it! It's black with tan interior and polished woodgrain.

Pretty powerful and sold feeling.

Only problems are you have to press the unlock button to open any of the doors from the outside. I wish there was an override to keep it from locking when you start driving forward.

We discovered a deep scratch in the fender last night.

YAY 8)
you're basically driving a later 2000s ford taurus under a different name. fine car, with volvo C-8 underpinnings.
the deep fender scratch is by somebody who is envious of your shiny newer car. be careful where you park.

we're having this problem. Every time we go out for a ride, the digital display on the dash reads less and less MPGs. When we first got it, it was at 21 MPG but now it's down to 15.

Sure, we're not really taking it out on the highway much but the gas mileage shouldn't be dropping off like that.

a remote possibility, but that the previous owners/dealer had driven the car with a lighter right foot than you may be driving it now.

even staying totally legal, there can be differences in the duration and alacrity with which you apply accelerator and brakes that can make a substantial difference in your fuel economy. if you live in a hilly area that also is something to factor in, in that climbing a hill generally uses more fuel than is saved by coasting down the other side [info courtesy of my mechanically inclined brother]. i am not criticising you.

Wasn't the 500 supposed to replace the Crown Vic?

it was a replacement for the taurus until ford stopped being weird and re-christened the 500 as the taurus. the crown vic for now is still too useful as a law enforcement vehicle, due to its interior room.

I presume you check the tyre pressures?

Maybe nothing wrong with the car but the digital display is reading wrong?, Check your real MPG, fill the tank up to full, zero the trip meter, next time you fill up, fill it back up to full and make a note of how many litres you put in, then divide the milage from your trip meter, by how many liters you used, you then divide that figure by 0.220 to convert it to MPG from LPG, or maybe you could convert the litres to gallons on an online converter, then divide your milage by that.

What colour are your spark plugs?, if they are black then its running too rich, maybe your airfilters dirty or something?

Dude, you are talking to Americans. They don't know what a litre is. :D

And even if you were talking gallons the American gallon is smaller than the English one.

I'm not going to pretend that I comprehend any of this discussion, but I wish you very prosperous journeys in your new Ford.

Actually I dont know what a Litre is, and Iam English, Thats why I have to convert it into gallons so I know whats going on, I know its jolly expensive for such a small unit of measurement, at least our speedos are still in MPH

Good point about the smaller American gallon, though a physical test of what hes actually getting might help him, I thought his quoted figures where rather low!

why the usa does not covert to metric is simply political, got to prove how tough/superior we are. the metric system is....beautiful.

friend masterjedi.......if the original mileage was based on predominately highway/freeway/autobahn type driving and you're now doing stoplight to stoplight driving, the mileage will drop like a rock.

not long ago had a corvette that on the freeway/interstate would average about 25/27 mpgallon. great cruiser.....
80 mph was 2000 rpm. in town, lots of traffic lights to deal with, traffic, it would get 7 or 8 mpg. tore the hell out of the average.

good cruising.

My grandpa bought a Buick Rendevous, first time I rode in it the average was 24mpg I believe. Currently it sits at 21mpg. Owner habits and routes are to blame of course.
