fibromyalgia - what is the reason?
hello,
i don´t wanna steal your time, so i will come to the point.
what do you think causes fibromyalgia?
i did read about 10000 websites related to fibromyalgia. there are many ideas. i tried to ignore details, so that i didn´t get into something like a thinking-loop, this happens sometimes. but it was to much. since my last burning out, it seems that i am not longer able to read masses of informations and find something like a key to the problem (maybe that pattern is the right word - for those who speak german, what is the right word for "muster"?). it seems that there is more than one link to disorders, which are in near to asperger disorder (have a look at COMT (Chromosome 22, Position 158, Val/Met..., it seems to be related to adhs, antisocial disorder, schizophrenia, parkinson and further disorders) I keep in mind that there is already a theory that sees the causing for as, adhs, some autoimmune disorders in something like a reunion of neanderthalers with a wave of modern humans from africa... some things, e.g. the ginger-gen, seems to corroborate this theory, but it does not help against the pain.
maybe there is anyone here who is investitigating in the same or a similar thing.
i would like to hear your theories and ideas what to do against the pain.
many thanks!
btw: i am not affected myself by fibro...
I believe chronic fatigue syndrome and fibro to be related...I've been sick with both since 1999...and just plain "different", anti-social & quirky all of my life.
CDC just released the results of some new studies on chronic fatigue in mid April...
The entire press release can be found here for anyone interested in reading it.

Another study I found very interesting was a research paper by Rich Van Konynenburg, Ph.D...he compared similar occurances of depleted glutathione levels in both autism and chronic fatigue.

Althought I am not "officially" diagnosed with Asperger's, it was sugested before at an evalutation years ago (I am reluctant to seek a diagnosis, partly because I am hesitant to have another label placed on my medical chart...and partly because I don't care to take part in the medical/psych "dance" of being prescribed another medication that I am unable to tolerate, or being told I need to work on "change" when for the first time in years I am finally content and happy with "me"...quirks and all).
With the fibro...I have made diet and lifestyle changes...mainly trying to limit the amount of chemicals I injest or inhale on a day to day basis...and I have seen a difference pain-wise and in my fatigue.
The one thing I really can't eliminate is stress...social situations, changes in my routines, etc...still overload me, more so when I'm feeling bad to begin with...and the day after a really stressful day I can wake up feeling like someone steamrolled me.
I have more than wondered...if being the way I was/am made me more likely to end up with this...

The most interesting theory for FM I came across was ages ago, in the newspaper. Unfortunately I couldn't find it when I wanted to refer to it, but it was something along the lines of nerves transmitting pain messages even though there was no 'pain' to transmit.
I shall have to look it up at some point - it seems to run in my family, and I'm next in line, basically. I already seem to have a lower pain threshold than most of my peers ... yay.

I had chronic fatigue about 4 years ago, it lasted for about 4-5 months, and then I would little bouts here and there for a year or two after that, but I´ve been okay since. I believe that there definitely is a mind/body connection at work here and that severe depression, or long bouts of depression can cause your body to stop functioning properly. I believe that it has been documented that depression lowers the amount of anti-bodies that your blood produces, and I know that it has been documented that stress shortens part of your cell structure so that you will die sooner, so there is definitely some type of a mind/body connection going on.
When I had chronic fatigue I was at the lowest point in my life, and the doctor mentioned that this was definitely a factor. So, I started to change my mentality (I never believed that I had a chemical imbalance, I always believed that my depression was a faulty perception of how things "should" be, but weren´t), and eventually, the less I was depressed, the more the chronic fatigue went away. Although I still get depressed sometimes, its not as bad as it was overall before, and its in bouts now and not a consistent every second, every day kind of thing like before, and I haven´t had to deal with chronic fatigue since.
hello,
very interesting the ideas so far. i wonder that here (germany) many health professionals say that fibro or cfs is only something like a syndrom of lazy people. Maybe that the well known "german angst" is underway under some health professionals too: to get member of german club, hide your frailty or ignorance by blaming others... e.g. sick people. other says: people affected by fibro are trying hard to do the things the community is awaiting, they do it without respect for the own body or own needs in general. they start to forget their own needs with adolescence or while pregnancy.
i did read that some people call fibromyalgia the luminary-killer-syndrome because of the fact that all experts flops so far
away from my prejudices, back to the problem. does anyone know if there is a point in time when this autoimmune disorders, don´t know if it is really linked to fibro, in general became increasing? Some people say it starts with using penicillin in masses (They say things like allergies are also caused by using penicillin or antibiotika in general), others say that there was a further wave with using to much iodine in salt e.g. while pregnancy. linked to some autoimmune disorders they found problems with telomerase (also in psioriasis, people with psoriasis seems to have a predisposition to be affected by fibromyalgie, allergies and autoimmune disorders. EBV, some people says ebv causes fibro, is known to affect telomerase too. some malaria pharmaceuticals seems to help. link to ebv: ebv prevents from malaria. others say that fibro reminds them to aids. others say that bacteriophages kills bacteria and their dead covers in plasma is causing f. why does some pharmaceuticals, designed for treating parkinson or epilepsy, reduce the pain? is a wrong cell theory the problem to understand the fibromyalgia (see http://www.gilbertling.org/)? are cells egoistic? is the thyroid involved like others say, or is it a vitamin-d problem? has anything of this to do with fibromyalgia at all?
i am sure, anyone in world has found away to kill at least the pain by a fluke. mind you, without blowing out brain with opium or so, without killing liver.
i wonder that i couldn´t determine if there is a hla-type which is a predisposition for fibromyalgia. maybe there is no such a link.
edit: for those who use irc. there is a channel #fibromyalgia, located at undernet.org
