I was a professional photographer for decades and owned all sorts of 35mm and 6x6 cm and 6x7 cameras. The brand didn't matter. They were all good and all did the same job.

My photographic "guru" (a world famous Californian photographer) told me "I could teach any fool to use a camera in a week. What makes you a "real" photographer is whether you have the "eye" for a good picture."

Anyway, having said that I dumped my remaining "film" cameras that I hardly ever used these days and last week I bought a Canon PowerShot SX10 IS.

Oh wow! It is amazing! I am "born again". I used to spend up to $1000 a week just on film and proofing. I was aware that every time I clicked the trigger it was costing me money.

Now I can take hundreds of pictures and it costs me nothing. Keep the good ones and delete the duds.

I can't say that Canon is "better" than Nikon or the others.

I wanted a camera that behaved as closely to a "real" (film) camera as possible. I wanted it to look and feel like an old 35mm camera. I wanted to look through a real through the lens viewfinder. I wanted to be able to control focus, shutter speed and depth of field.

Well it does that and more than I knew a camera COULD do. With the flick of a switch I can take black and white or sepia photos. It will compensate for indoor lighting. I can set it for beach or snow photos. With the press of a button it takes video with stereo sound.

The lens zooms from 28mm to 2000mm! Not only that it turns onto automatic macro mode so that I can fill the frame with a postage stamp or coin.

But it is still a tool. It might be the Swiss Army Knife of cameras but if I want to take GOOD photographs I have to master it so that changing between modes is second nature.

In the end it is still an art. It still comes down to light and shade, background, composition, and knowing the exact split second to hit the shutter.

Hey EL60. I just noticed that you were from Geelong . (Cairn the Cats)

So I am your neighbor because we are living in Portarlington for the next six weeks.

We sold our house in Doncaster and bought a really nice mud brick house in Belgrave backing right onto the national forest. But because of settlement dates we had to rent a place for a few weeks and here we are. :D

I use a Nikon D40X. It was recommended to me through a friend (thank you friend!). Before I got this camera I had only ever used my grandmas very basic point and shoot digital camera, so I knew practically nothing about how to use anything more advanced. It was probably stupid to buy it as impulsively as I did but I don't regret it.
The first time I used it I said to myself..."Hey, I'm not too bad at this!" and now that I know how to use it properly, no thanks to the instruction manual, it's been of good value. It's just too bad that the battery charger seems to not work on occassion.

The first camera I had was LeClic Disc camera, then I got a purplish point and shoot 35mm camera. When I took photography in High school. I got a Canon AE-1, and instantly fell in love with Canon. My first digital camera was Sony Digital Mavica w/ 3 1/2 in floppy disk as the film. I then got a Canon Powershot G5, that was good camera. After that I picked up a Kodak P880, because it was on sale. I was never comfortable with the Kodak.

I'm currently using Canon Rebel XTi and absolutely love it. I also have a small digital Olympus point and shoot that I use when I can't take my big camera.

No pro photographer here.
Have a Canon digital something which since Christmas 2007 has had several thousand photos run through it.
A couple good enough to be paid for.

Would like to have something with a Leica lens, stepdaughter suggests those.

I dream of the day where I can make a living off of photography, plus it's the only thing I could honestly see myself happy doing. I currently shoot with a Canon 7D and I use 5 different lenses. I use a Canon 50mm f/1.8, a Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 Planar T, a Canon 75-300mm f/4-5.6 II, a Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, and I use a Tamron Di SP 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 lenses. I also use a Nissin Di622 Mark II flash with a softbox and a Contax TLA Flash, and I use 2 tripods. I want to get a Gitzo tripid, and a Canon 1D-X but the 1D-X is super expensive so prob gonna get a Canon 1D Mark II with a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS Mark II lense, a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L, a Canon 100mm f/2.8L, and Canon 50mm f/1.2L, and a Canon Speedlight 580 EX II if I land this internship over the summer. If there are any pro or amateur photographers reading this you'll understand what those are. If your interested in photography and want to buy gear I suggest bhphoto cause they have reviews under everything camera wise. also check out my photos if you want and lemme know what you think captureminnesota com/users/chrisjuhn

I'm not much of a photographer and make do with simple point-and-shoot cameras. Until recently, I've been using an old Kodak EasyShare C613. A few days ago, I've treated myself to a Panasonic DMC-FS35, which was the best digital camera for under 100 Euro in several tests. I have yet to take it for a spin.

Don't fell bad that you just have a point and shoot. Some of my best photos were taken with a point and shoot. I know plenty of photographers with thousands invested in equipment that suck, a few that even call themselves professionals. Chase Jarvis said it best, "The best camera is the one you have with you." Don't ever think that just cause you have a 100.00 digital point and shoot that its a bad thing. A real photographer can produce stunning images with anything including a cell phone camera even. Practice every day and when you do get that fancy DSLR you will make that much better images.

I use a Nikon D5100 DSLR, and 4 lenses(Nikon 18-55mm VR f3.5, Nikon 35mm f1.8G, Nikon 55-200mm f4.0, Rokinon 85mm f1.4). I also have a small slider and a suction cup mount for cars, et cetera. I use it more for video and time lapse photography. I would like to get a Canon Rebel T3i as an addition, so I can film at 60fps for slow motion, and use the Twixtor plugin for Sony Vegas to do up to 2000fps. It would also be nice to have the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 lens. Brands mean nothing to me, only capabilities do.

I use a Pentax. I can scrounge pawn shops and second hand stores for lenses with a pk mount since they all work (except for very old screw mount ones). The newer camera (pentax k5) also has better ratings than the nikon d7000 and canon 7d. Although the 7d still is partly a better camera.

Personally I was planning on sticking with Pentax, because its purely random photography I do. Plus the k5 is priced under the 7d+d7000, and is fully weather sealed (you can pour water on it comfortably).

I currently own a simply Pentax kx which I purchased a long time back now. Its lacking a lot of things I want, like one touch bracketing/time lapse.
