for me, it was-
my late father's late mercedes 300 - it was like riding in a bank vault on wheels. in icy wintertime edmonton, alberta, i rode in a '92 lincoln towncar taxicab that was like floating over the frost-heave-rutted and cratered road. i got to test-drive an '88 cadillac deville fleetwood that also was just like floating over the road, in that all the bumps and such [on coarsly bumpy and rutted south tacoma way] were totally filtered-out. a '93 chevy lumina [base sedan], surprisingly, road just as well, as i noted when i test-drove one over a bunch of broken pavement and raised railroad tracks around where i used to live- i just floated over the tracks without even a sound.

anybody else out there in WPland have any cushy road vehicle experiences they would share? i would love to have a car that totally filtered-out the bumpy cratered pavement out where i live. i don't care about sharp handling, only comfort for my aching back.

I remember that the Skodas which my mother used to own were very quiet... or they appear to be in my memory...

My 70 Nova was the smoothest. No kidding. The suspension was redone.

Not my car, that's for sure. Apparently my make and model comes included with suspension problems so I'm not surprised. Dunno how long my spokes will last. They already make prangy noises when they shouldn't, and my car seems to have lean on it even at kerb weight.

I had a friend who's mum had a Cadillac. That was a very smooth and quiet ride. I don't remember the make of it, but it was a very smooth ride.

Strangely, my dad's Oldsmobile is the smoothest thing I've ever ridden in. You don't feel a thing, even at 55 on a dirt road. It's a 1997 Oldsmobile 88LS. On the other hand my mom's Ford 500 is extremely bumpy despite being fairly new.

My 2005 Toyota Carolla. (I hate that she's white. I was very much hopeing for blue or black.) It's much quieter than my Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera. it was more fun driveing the old, moldy thing down the road with the window open, because of the wind, dust in my eyes, and rattling of the shell. I learned to love the freeway with that blue car. ( Look! Ignore the avatar! No, I don't hang my face out the driver's side. Heheh.)

The Avensis is pretty sweet too, comfortable and reliable enough.

I'll grok the Cadillac experience. .... never owned own though.
A friend has a 05/06 (?) Mercedes but it never struck me as anything unusual. (I dont know the model but it's a large car.)

Believe it or not this F150 rides as nicely as most cars. ^^ Trucks, suvs are generally a rough riding bunch.

I'd say the smoothest, quietest vehicle I've driven and ridden in, was a 1947 Cadillac fastback coupe. It has the old-style lever shock absorbers, and weighs PLENTY. It glides over the worst holes and bumps, and you can't hear or feel the old flathead V8 engine.

#2 probably would be a 1977 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz, which I had as a daily driver a long time ago. It weighed 5000 lbs, and was unbelievably quiet from road noise inside. However, the engine could be heard inside the car.

Worst/roughest/loudest: My 1996 Toyota Hilux 4x4 Diesel rock crawler truck. No muffler, and I made the motor mounts to be durable; not to damp engine vibration and noise. You feel every pebble on the road, and you can't hear yourself think while on the road, but it's incredibly fun to drive!

My Toyota Avalon '09 is so quiet that quite a few times I turned the key to turn the car on after the engine was already on. On the road its as if you glide on air. The only noise I get from it is from the A/C whirr'ng

I loved that car.

I rode in a streetcar that was REALLY quiet once. I also rode in this hybrid taxi that was really quiet.

You won't hear electric streetcars or cars so I guess they qualify as the quietest? Universal tie?

i was pretty impressed with a 2000 toyota avalon [with a buick-style split bench seat and column shifter] that i test-drove a decade back. it was the only japanese car with american big-car comfort, it actually had seats big enough for my big caboose, and a wide flat floor big enough for my long muscular legs and feet. it rode like a buick but handled like a mercedes, and it was so quiet it also had a thingamagic that would refuse to engage the starter if you tried to crank it while the engine was already running. low-end torque was lacking, though, that engine would only wake up above about 3500 rpm. i don't care for the tight and low-slung cockpit and narrow seats of the newer avalons, they are made for younger fitter people.
