Just curious, when you post online, are you careful about what you post so that you minimize the possibility of offending other people? Do you do so in the interest of protecting your reputation? Do you do so in projecting an accurate portrayal of the way "you really act" in real life (Where you are also careful about what you say)? You know, e-street cred is a valuable commodity these days, so it's an understandable way of operating.

Personally,

I just need to make sure people can't link my real life identity to my "anonymous" online accounts, which there has been a single leak in the past but hopefully that information won't be exploited.

Just as surely as in a face-to-face scenario.

No more or less than anywhere else.

Yes, something like that.

I would rather they be able to find no difference at all.

I'm super careful. I'm pretty familiar with privacy settings on most websites I use and usually you can't see anything embarrassing unless I allow you to.

Yes. I find that offending people has no use value.

No. I find that if I can't say something without offending someone, then they won't listen, so it will be wasted energy.

I am a lot like I am online in meatspace.

I try very hard not to offend others, online and off. I have enough trouble doing it without meaning to.

I try to be anonymous online simply for privacy reasons, not because I'm worried that what I say one place will be seen in another. The difference between my online self and my offline self is that my online self talks 900% more.

I just checked out the lyrics of Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation" song, and I found this part...

Quote:
An' everyone can say
What they want to say
It never gets better anyway
So why should I care
'Bout a bad reputation anyway

That's exactly my reason! When I am careful about what I post, it's not any better anyways.

No. And I'm not careful when talking face to face, either. Sure, I'm very reserved, but when I'm feeling comfortable enough, I'll say whatever is on my mind. In other words, I'm always offending my friends.

One reason I prefer communicating on line is that I have time to say exactly what I want in a way that will not accidentally offend. I have caused offense off line, and worry that I might again.

Ditto to that, and what a relief it is to finally be able to "talk." As to maintaining privacy, that's very important to me. None of us knows which way the wind will be blowing next year or even next week, so it's wise not to have anything out there that could be tied directly to us.

Everything that I have in my profile and the things that I post reflect how I act in real life. Just ask my mum.
She said it like it is, in 1998.

Indeed it is. The only time I'd done so previously is when we were required to keep a writing journal for an English class and turn it in once a week. I had a year-long conversation with my teacher that way.

That song just makes me think of Freaks and Geeks.

I am still just as careful posting online as I am verbally speaking to people, except that online I find it easier to be more stubborn in my opinions (without trying to offend anyone), but due to slow thinking I find being assertive and stubborn more harder when I'm speaking verbally.

I try hard not offend people IRL and online and thus try my best to be a gentleman. I consider it cowardly and pathetic to adopt an aggressive persona when online if you're actually a timid person IRL

I'm probably not as careful as I ought to be, in regards to both not offending people and in trying to protect my identity.

The main point of it is that, as far as possible, you should never post things under your own name online unless you absolutely have to. Rants, mucky photos and juvenile/derogatory remarks have the potential to bite the poster on the arse years afterwards.
