mcdonald's seemed to taste so much better when i was a child. the balance of the taste and moistness and texture all combined to make me swallow my bite after only a few chews it was so delicious.
i preferred quarter pounders with cheese then.
over the years, various constraints have been imposed upon their products to make them more "healthy". many years ago, the fiber content in the buns was very low. fiber is indigestible, and therefore not desirable by the appetite. pure fiber is repulsive. it is like eating a shredded doormat.
so they grind the bran (the husks) into a "flour" and they add some of that to the white flour to increase the fiber levels due to tightening regulations. the result is a less palatable bun that does not melt in one's mouth.
i am aware that fiber is necessary to scour the intestines of a kind of "plaque", and in nature, animals get fiber naturally because they are not dexterous enough to separate indigestible material from what goes into their mouths. given a choice, all animals will eat the most purified form of nutrition they can.
there is no inbuilt appetite that craves for indigestible material in any animal. it is just ingested as a consequential by product of their inability to filter the nutritious bits from the non nutritious bits.
anyway, the buns are not as easy to incorporate into my system as they were. also the sugar content of the buns was reduced substantially many years ago, and that also contributes to the lack of simplicity in the carbohydrate chain, and renders it more difficult to chew, swallow and digest. i am still well able to eat mcdonalds, but it does not get sucked into my system as seamlessly as it did before the health regulations altered their composition.
they have also severely restricted the use of trans fats in the meat patties which has resulted in the meat patties being somewhat drier and due to the reduced volume, they taste too salty as well.
these days i still eat mcdonalds about once per fortnight. i must have all my food as fresh as it can be, so i always order my food with an exception that will ensure it must be cooked while i wait.
if i get a big mac, then i will order it with 1/2 the amount of sauce and no pickles.
if i get a quarter pounder with cheese, i will order it without pickles and with 1/2 the amount of onions.
when i get fries, i always order them to be unsalted, and after i am given them i ask for a sachet of salt. i always get pristinely fresh fries which i then salt myself.
sometimes my ordering experience comes to grief when someone forgets an element in my order. so if the big mac finally arrives, and there is no simultaneous arrival of the fries, then i become agitated and i wonder how the fries are going since my wonderfully fresh big mac is now aging. sometimes i want to walk behind the counter and into the kitchen to see how my fries are cooking up and hurry the process along, but i know that would be inappropriate.
i can not eat the big mac before the fries, so i must wait for the fries, and if they are ready late, then i do not enjoy them because i stuff them in my mouth hastily so i can get them eaten before my big mac is totally disgusting.
mcdonalds is ok once per fortnight for me.
