And how many of them have never made a post?

How many of them have over 1000?

How many of them have over 10,000?

Perhaps. However, I've been a member of the Ship of Fools forum for a while, and have only a very few posts there (mostly because there's people saying Clever Stuff) - but I'd be deeply miffed if someone randomly deleted my account.

I think the simplest solution would be to remove the display of member numbers. Few people would care how many dormant accounts were sitting in a database somewhere if it weren't advertised, and I'm guessing the server could in principle deal with a very much larger number without suffering in any way.

They should probably clean house. Send a PM to all members asking for a reply within 1 months time. Then put those accounts that don't in some sort of 6 month/one year limbo. So if they missed the 1 month mark they can still have a chance to reactivate for 6 months or a year, but their account will be effectively off the radar until they return/choose to reactivate. That way people that are very infrequent posters won't unfairly lose their accounts. Just a thought

Can you tell the difference between a lurker and an unused account? I don't see any last logged in dates. And why do we care about unused accounts anyway?

And I suppose if you post here anyway you'll be perfectly alright. Because you're posting.

So the argument goes. Ahem. ;)

And this matters because? .....

Perhaps some people are just shy and feel like they want to belong to something - so what, we should feel some sympathy.

Is just joke! I don't think it matters one way or the other. What matters is that we who do use WP enjoy it, or find it useful, or somethink.
