I'm an American btw. Do you think American society promotes being mean? And do you think Americans on average have more mean characteristics than other cultures?

I kind of have to say yes. I think it's because we are so into individualism that we actually kind of glorify selfishness.

I wouldn't say Americans are mean, but a large portion of them are dismissive. I'm not sure how this compares to other countries, though, since I've never been out of the US.

IDK like being so against universal healthcare and stuff (not that I support Obama's plan, but most Americans just hate the idea of not having to pay for healthcare). and like how militaristic we are as a people.

Americans are fat, selfish, clueless douchebags.

However, people in most other countries aren't much better... maybe less fat, but just as douchey.

I find it interesting that you bring this up, because I'm always hearing stereotypes about how the French are mean.

That's more dismissive than mean, if you ask me.

I'm not going to get into my thoughts on Obama's healthcare bill because I would rather not get your thread moved to PPR.

Many people are mean, this is true. However, I'm not convinced this is a US specific issue as it is demographics. Smaller towns tend to be friendlier than large cities, for example. I'm willing to bet this holds true for just about any country.

French people are quite the opposite. Very friendly people in my experience; much more so than the people in my native England, where life is becoming more and more of a cut-throat rat-race where people avoid and don't talk to each other any more. People can be neighbours with someone for years and never speak to them! Here in France the majority of people are more amiable. Certainly in the rural areas anyway, I don't know about the big cities.

@OP, No.

And for some reason, all the meanest people I've spoken with on the internet have always been European. They enjoy stereotyping against me and telling me what an evil person I am for not supporting all government programs and supporting my military.

I think people living in rural areas tend to be very friendly. It's pretty much a given. Aside from the French, I also hear stories about how unpleasant people living in New York City are. I guess it's more of a rural vs. urban thing than a nationality thing.

I wouldn't neccesarily say that of small towns at all. They can be very hostile and closed circles to people outside the village and have a very inward looking mentality, such as what existed in the villages that lay between Huddersfield and Sheffield in West Yorkshire where I resided for awhile.

It's never a place thats bad its the people that make it bad. Some of the most impoverished cities in the UK have some of the most welcoming and hospitable people. Whereas the tremendous concentration of Wealth in London has only made it a cold harsh and unforgiving rat race environment. A very fluid population that has mean't there is no real coheason of an established community.

The American people I've met have generally been some of the nicest people I've come across. They tend to be open and friendly, if a bit naive and loud.

From my perspective the USA is quite right wing. Even Democrats seem more right wing than our mainstream right wing parties in the UK. There seems to be more of an emphasis on individual freedoms, and capitalism. Which could be interpreted as meanness I guess.

And Parisians are the rudest people I've ever met.

In my experience, small towns are friendly towards visitors and new comers, but they don't really accept them into the community.

I think anyone can be mean regardless of where they live. I have met tons of mean Americans (heck, I am related to a lot of them!). I've also met some mean French people in Paris (but then Parisiens are notoriously rude to outsiders). In Austria, I met some very very nice people inspite of the fact that this was a country who was quick to persecute people back in Hitler's era.

Lots of isolated towns in Mississippi, and Arkansas like that too...

Deliverance anyone?
