I noticed that some mothers of autistic children (whether they are LFA or otherwise) dedicate an entire youtube channel to filming the behaviours of their kid. While I understand that the intent is to show the world what autistic behaviour is like, I feel that its wrong to consistently film videos of your child for the world to see. I doubt that many of the children know that they are being filmed and shown online to the world. Isn't it interesting that if someone specifically films you for a commercial or ad (so not just a passer-by), they need you to sign a consent form yet an autistic child who does not know whats going on is allowed to be film and have a channel dedicated soley to them.

What do you think?

It's troubling when it involves people unable through age or disability to give informed consent.

Its sad that the mothers do not understand the child's disability... It almost like discriminating against the child.. All the child would want is acceptance and not to be shown to the world as a disabled person...

Yah, there's this one channel where the mother just uploads many videos of her son moaning and injuring himself and having seizures. I don't even see the point. One or 2 videos of this would be enough.

It's exploitative and violates their children's privacy.

Should I also take down my youtube videos of my kids? I know they aren't disabled, but it's exploitative and they didn't give consent.

Some specialists would like to see videos to better understand and handle the situations.. It's a great tool to document the progression. The intent isn't to exploit them, but to keep the memories I'd imagine.

No, posting videos of her child in pain is horrible don't you think so?

It depends on what the videos are like. If its soley filming your kids and they have no idea that they are being seen on the internet in public then its best to inform them of what you are doing.

Maybe not in pain, but I think its still horrible to post perhaps over 100 videos of your kid going thru "seizures and self-injurous episodes".

I wouldn't post things like that on the internet, but I don't really see an issue with it. There are many reasons why a parent would do that, and quite honestly... it's not much different than me posting a picture of my son in an incubator when he was in the NICU.
