These were the "original" words to describe people with intellectual impairment. Then people started calling things "stupid", "idiotic" and "moronic". Nowadays the words are no longer connected to intellectual impairment. "ret*d" came to replace them. However people now also refer to things as being "ret*d". Perhaps one day "ret*d" will be the same way as the other words, if people stop connecting it to intellectual impairment. People get offended if someone refers to something as "ret*d", but not if they refer to it as "stupid", "idiotic" or "moronic" as those words are no longer connected to intellectual impairment.

I was called a ret*d in elementary school for needing to be in a Special Education programme for most of the day. That was back in the 80s. The education system didn't know what else to do with people who were HFA back than. Those memories are very painful for me. That's why I'm very sensitive about the words, ret*d and ret*d. I became very cynical about my peers after that. I couldn't tell if they really wanted to be friends with them, or if I wasn't "perfect" enough for them.

I do think ret*d will be okay to use someday because people will stop connecting it to the mentally disabled and not be such hypocrites about it anymore.

Exactly. Today they sell books called "complete idiot's guides" to things and no one is offended by them, as that word is no longer connected to intellectual impairment.
