Smart dress - why??

What is the purpose of smart dress? What is the point of wearing uncomfortable and possibly hot clothes just to prance about and get photographed?

Came from a reunion email from my old school. Well obviously I would miss a reunion at any chance, but that just pushes me away even further.

Please someone enlighten me as to why people dress smartly, and even more, why do people enjoy it?!?!?!

The main idea is to raise the status of the event and to deter lower classes (who obviously don't know how to behave ) from attending.
It changes 'a few pints and some snacks' to 'cocktails and canapes'..

Smart clothes don't have to be uncomfortable though. I like to look good (but am not fashionable) but I won't buy any clothes that I find uncomfortable to wear, especially if I'm going to be wearing them for hours in a warm room.

An old friend from High School is getting married. I'm trying to decide if I even want to try to make it.

I have this weird job running freight across the country in a Cargo Van and I have no formal wear clothes with me.

If I don't show up my job is an easy excuse because I really am running everywhere. I might be close by or I might be running up in Canada.

Weddings sound horrible.
