I went geocaching yesterday with my brother and 2 other church friends. I wouldn't say it was "really fun" but it was a nice experience. We couldn't find one of them and we found 2 of them (so 3 attempts in total and 2 successes).

Anyone else gone geocaching before? I highly recommend you try it. All you need is a GPS device.

Yes, I've done it!
I guess it's a really cool thing to do with little kids but I didn't find it that exciting. You get to walk around in places you otherwise wouldn't come though, that's kind of the only thing I liked about it.

Actually one of the items was at the bottom of a lamppost in a parking lot.

I haven't done geocaching but adventure races are pretty similar. Basically in an adventure race you are given a set of UTM coordinates and a map and you must plot each coordinate and hike to them. Then you punch a card when you get to each one. It is quite a challenge though, you can visit the coordinates in any order you want and some of the coordinates ended up just being coordinates to other places. I did an adventure race in January in southern Indiana. It was rather intense, there were 47 teams an only 13 finished... my team finished in about 46 hours. We probably hiked 40-50 miles in that time and all our water froze and we were all probably in the first stage of hypothermia by the end... I like sports that can quickly turn into life or death wilderness survival situations.

I have been wanting to do this for the longest time. What kind of GPS device would one need to go geocaching?

I am very experienced with GIS and GPS, as it's also my field of work.

I go geocaching with my kids (6 and 9yo) all the time and we have a blast!

I have a Garmin Oregon 550T GPS, but I don't recommend it at all - the battery life is terrible and it's very difficult to read in sunlight.

I use my iPad and it's perfect - I believe you need the 3G version in order to have GPS capability though - get the Geocaching app from Geocaching.com and you're good to go...

Any GPS would do, if you can figure out how to put coordinates in. Heck, even my phone's GPS works (I tried it on Monday when we went to Sauvie's Island).

Has anyone here found a GeoCoin? I have found the Michigan one and the one from Germany.
