Looking advice on fiat ducato 1.9TD 2001 -squeqinq

so every time i start van i hear squaqinq from fan belt probably...should i chance it or is this normal after you start motor at cold?

Check if there's oil on the belt. Then if there's oil on the belt, then you'd want to check the timing cam pullies, or the crankshaft pulley seals, and see if there's oil coming out of any of those seals. If there's oil, you need the seals replaced eventually. You using lots of oil?

If it's not, then either the belt is getting old and worn, or the tensioner needs adjustment or is old and dying, and the belt isn't getting the right tension, either the tensioner is stuck, or it's worn and wobbly/etc.

But no, it's not normal, I don't know that car really, we don't have Fiats in USA for the most part, so I know nothing specifically about it. If the car uses v ribbed belts, ie, seperate belts for each accessory (alternator, AC compressor, power steering, etc) or if there's one serpentine belt. If it uses V belts, you can probably just replace the individual belt that's squeaking. If it's serpentine, one belt for the whole system, need to replace it.

For the cheapest fix, though, try getting a can of belt dressing from a place that sells auto supplies. Spraying belt dressing on will bandaid the squeakiness for a bit. As for it squeaking, despite it being not correct, generally it's not catastrophic or anything like that, you can still drive the car, but usually it means the belt or tensioner is on it's way out.

There's a pic of worn belts, look over the belt and see if it has any of those things going on, if so, try to replace it soon. If it's just dry and has no/very little cracks spray it with belt dressing and you should be fine. Usually regular serpentine belt replacement is like 30-40K miles, so if you can't remember doing it and you owned the car for a significant period of time, go get it done soon. Worst case scenario for not getting done is overheating, though, as usually the serpentine belt drives the water pump. Some cars like Hondas older (non K) motors have the water pump driven by the timing belt, so that's not an issue. No idea on the Fiat though. If the belt breaks while driving, you may lose power steering/alternator/etc, though.

I hope my longwinded boring post answered your questions. In summary, spray belt dressing to bandaid on and get it replaced soon.
