Personally, I'd want to have textbooks and references composing most of the library's books and lots of quiet and well lit areas to study. I'd want to have lots of windows and a garden surrounding the library, with food growing all around and picnic tables for people to eat and study at. I'd want the structure to be a monolithic dome with two stories and I'd want it to be situated overlooking a coast.

So, if you could build a library, what would it be like?

^ That sounds fantastic! That would be a dream come true for me. I would love to have a natural museum with it. I would have books, books and more books of every possible subject, CDs and records on every kind of music that's out there, videos, DVDs and movies and the garden with lots of comfortable benches and private little pathways, a crooked stream, a secluded grotto, a peaceful pond with fish and all different types of plants, flowers, shrubs and trees and all of this would be enclosed in beautiful glass building built like a castle tucked between some mountains.

A library can be a very important place to find relaxation. My house has two libraries. The first one doubles as a home theatre. Some of the groups of books are on the paranormal, magicians, ancient cultures, world history, autism, television, music, amusement parks and roller coasters, etc. This is the same library where I keep my CDs and DVDs---each of those occupy a different part of the library. The second library is more for comfort. There are two comfortable over-sized sofas. The ceiling in that room is a little over 12 feet high, but the room feels quaint. The books in it are more of the coffee table variety and eclectic. Examples of books there include things like weird news headlines, kids' books, school yearbooks, etc.

My old house is a bit eclectic---like me. There are secret areas in it. The original library I had in it was hidden---a secret library. It was on the second floor hidden behind a wall in a spare bedroom. Today, that room contains leftover papers and junk. The next library I had in it was on the first floor---until this past summer when my oldest son took it over as his bedroom. It still contains a library shelf unit and a large storage compartment where he keeps some of his books and stuff. There is also a music room in my house where my wife and I keep our music books---so I guess you could call that a sort of library, a music library. And in the music room there is a storage unit where I keep some very important and rare things. I store my house and roller coaster blueprints there. And hidden away are things like a piece of fabric off of the Graf Zeppelin, autographed celebrity photos, an original Hollywood TV script, the master dub reel of a gold record, a mausoleum key  , my old view master reels, etc.

Libraries are neat places. They have the potential to reflect the personality of their owners. And I find it important to have secret areas in them to keep those special rare items that future generations can ponder.

I would build up a collection of informative books, as well as plenty of fictional classics (not like the crap that's being passed these days). I would also get a bunch of comfy chairs and soft lighting, so everyone who visited my library would read and enjoy books in comfort.

Like the library in the Doctor Who episode "Silence in the Library" only without the evil tree ghosts.
As for content, it would have a wing for each of the branches of science, and a wing for every major genera of of literature (science fiction, horror, mystery .etc), with the exception of romance novels.
See, there is a reason my library would cover a planet 8)

I always wanted my own library with the tall stacks made from some rich wood and lots of little nooks where you could get lost. A maze of books in three dimensions would be really nice. Throw in some of those alien monsters and there you go. Sorry, got carried away. 8)

I'd have books on every topic imaginable and some good fictional classics as well as science fiction novels. I'd also have records and CDs of every artist that there ever was. I'd also have a variety of movies and TV series on Blu-ray and DVD. There would be an eating area and than a lounge area with beanbag chairs and magazines.

One for only me would be a good start. Also no fiction books whatsoever, they are boring.

I'd like my library to be completely eco-friendly, with all electricity generated by hydro-electric power from the sea the library is situated close to. It would have comfy chairs and sofas and WIFI capability so I could use my laptop anywhere in it! There'd be sandalwood incense burning at all times. The books would all be reference books or Japanese manga comics (only the childrens mangas). There would be books about all the worlds languages and cultures, as well as science, technology, geography, art, design, religion, travel, cooking, sports, health etc; but no books about history because I see no point in studying it. There would be a secret password to enter it.

mine would be a mix of spaces. some dark places with high closely spaced shelves, light filtering through many dusty, musty smelling well thumbed tomes. and other places where itd be more open, well lit, the shelves slightly shorter and further apart. and i want there to be ladders with wheels. like at the state library on nsw. and i want there to be levels and balconies in a single room like at the state library too. there should be food in one part of the library. food goes well with books. the range of books would be great with manga/comics and audiobooks included and also video/dvd and cds.

I'm a fan of Neoclassical libraries such as the Library of Congress, I quite like Baroque Libraries such as this one I'll post, it's absolutely stunning.

Here's a stunning Baroque library, Klementinum Baroque Library Hall, Prague, very warm and comforting.

I would also want to have some big windows on one side and views out to the sea or beach of some sort. There would also be smaller areas or rooms to read with comfy sofas and artwork on the walls. It would contain fiction and non fiction books.

I'd like 2nd floor, room with a view. Big windows on one side, floor to ceiling shelves on 2 walls, audio & big screen TV on the final wall. A comfy chair, small refridge stocked with lime Perrier, and tea service. Secret entrance through a wardrobe. Books on music, science, mysticism, sci-fi, cooking, biographies.
