In the Summer of 1987, my parents decided that they didn't like my Cockney Accent. Keep in mind that I was raised in Canada, by Canadian parents and I had a Canadian sister. My parents wanted everybody in my family to be exactly the same, so instead of taming my sister's sassy attitude, they decided to shame me into losing my accent. One of the major characteristics of a Cockney accent is the flat, nasal affect. Every time that I opened my mouth to say anything, one of my parents would say, "Don't talk through your nose!" I heard it day in and day out. "Don't talk through your nose!" "You're talking through your nose, again!" "What's your problem! Don't talk though your nose!" "When are you going to stop talking through your nose?"
I got my parents back by trying to tame some of my sister's traits in the same manner. I also got my sister to sing along with me, whenever The Kinks were on the radio, than I'd laugh at her for sounding horrible for those songs, because she didn't have an accent. Once my parents caught on, they stopped trying to rid me of my accent. They apologized to me and I apologized to my sister.
