I love to check out dollar stores. It's kinda like going to a thrift shop or a garage sale. Sometimes I find some good stuff in the stores and sometimes I find a lot of "Made in China" junk. Some of them call themselves Dollar Stores but the things they sell cost more than just one dollar which I think is ridiculous. There are some things I buy that are the same item but cheaper than the grocery stores around here. How do you feel about Dollar Stores? Do they have something similar to our Dollar Stores in other countries, if so what are they called?

Dollar stores are stores. The only kind of stores I don't mind being in are antique stores and book stores.

Dollar stores can sometimes have some surprisingly good stuff, though.

I love antique and book stores so I know what you mean.

The ones we have where I live are Family Dollar and Dollar General Store. To me they are like reduced sized Wal-Marts which means not nearly as many people---which for me is good. In my town, there's probably no more than a dozen people in them at one time. So I don't mind them that much.

The equivalent of those we have here where I live, is "Everything For 4 Zlotys" stores. I like sometimes visiting them when I'm out (which is a really very rare occurance in my case) but there is nothing that could interest me much but for nail polish bottles (I don't buy any anymore, for I want to use up all those I already have before I buy myself some new ones).

That's the way it is here at the Dollar Store closes to me, Glider. And yes, it doesn't overwhelm like going to the large and loud supermarkets and walmart and K-Marts do. I hardly go to Walmart anymore, I haven't been in one the whole year. I do order around a $100.00 worth of things every month from Walmart.com and have it delivered to my door.

Something else I have noticed is the manager over here at this Dollar Store will try to get something for you if you ask. He's really changed the whole store for the better and he gives it a kind of old fashioned neighborhood store feel to it which is rare in this day and age.

Thanks for sharing that Irulan. I've been wondering if there are equivalent stores in other parts of the world to our Dollar Stores here in the US and what the names for them are.

Dollar stores are good for buying art supplies on the cheap such as pencils, rulers and pens. I've also found pretty good make-up there too.

Those stores are small or very small ones and often there are sold things which cost more than those promised 4 zlotys (there are also stores with "everything for 5 zlotys" in, as well).

pound shops in the uk are awesome! although we're being slightly taken over with a combination of '99p stores', 'poundland' and a new guy on the block called 'Sams' or something. Every single shopping place near me has at least three of this style shop D:

I don't mind dollar stores, but I also find that department stores have a wider selection and their toys are better.

:) me too and they are great for crafts . I just got through buying a bunch of sea shells to glue on a small collection of mirrors I bought for my bathroom and some Maybelline eye shadow.

Irulan - We use to have stores that sound similar to the "Everything for 5 Zlotys" they were called "Everything for 99 cents" stores. I don't know if they still exist. I haven't seen one for years.

OSB - I wondered what they were called in the UK. They're pretty common like that in the US too.

Mick - I agree, they usually don't have high quality toys and department stores are better for buying somethings of better quality.

I like to shop but not to spend money, so dollar stores are a dream come true. I go for party and holiday goods, batteries, craft items and basic food and medicine cabinet supplies. Most of what I buy seems a good value, but I judge other shoppers and they buy cartloads of junk!

I go to the local dollar store for candy and soda. I once bought headphones that were really nice, but my sister stepped on them by accident. I don't get perishable foods though, like milk and butter. Who knows where they buy the knock-offs?

I don't like to spend money either. I try to stay practical but I admit, I buy my jigsaw puzzles and sudoku books there because they're only a dollar. At the other places they're more expensive.
