Mars is just one of many celestial objects within reach of current propulsion technology that I would like to see, but if I were to want to live anywhere as a settler of a new frontier, that place would be Mars. I'd be willing to traverse the interplanetary void and see the Earth-moon system fade into the background as I journey to a new world to live. Traveling the solar system and seeing the rings of Saturn and other wonders would be awesome also.

I'd like to travel all through space and see everything. :)

I wonder if there is anything that can be done to change the geochemistry and atmospheric chemistry of Venus that could make it inhabitable as some time in the distant future. The Earth changed from a reducing to an oxidizing atmosphere in its past allowing an oxygen atmosphere and many of the biochemical reactions to take place. Mars is too small and too cold to ever be anything more than a waystation and resource center.

Mars can still be artificially inhabited, which is something I wouldn't mind at least. Even if it can't be terraformed, it is still able to be built upon on the surface, initially, and, eventually, beneath the surface as well - having homes and farms and vast complexes shielded from radiation by the ground itself. The beauty of the land in its current state could be preserved and there could be tremendous housing capability at the same time. Since it is a lifeless world though attempting terraformation would not really be an issue, and various methods of terraformation can be attempted and refined. Even if Mars isn't able to hold an atmosphere for millennia, it could at least hold one for centuries. Although there is no known method of restoring or creating a planetary magnetic field yet, on Mars it is something that would be worthwhile to attempt eventually.

I keep dreaming about Mars, images keep popping into my mind, but I don't have total recall.

Yeah, unfortunately in the political realm there are too many chiefs and not enough indians.

VASIMR wasn't being developed when Zubrin developed Mars Direct, it's just using chemical rockets. It could still have worked even with less advanced technology. We could have been starting the colonization of Mars back in the 70's even.
