On certian Lion King fourms when I ask why Timon is so unpopular and why it's such a theme to hate on him so much. When I ask, people get all upset and complain that I am "bumping an old topic" and to basically shut up. One of the oldest questions in Lion King fandom is who Nala's father is yet when a newcomer asks that, it's not considered an "old topic" and the majority of the people say it is Scar yet heaven forbid someone ask why Timon is so unpopular and Timon fans are looked down upon in Lion King fandom. I always suspected it has something to do with Timon being loud and obnoxious. I was that way as a kid when Lion King first came out and my mom says I like Timon so much because I can relate to him so much. The MAJORITY of Timon fans have AS or at least make me wonder if they do. I suspect the people who love to hate Timon are people who hate autistic people and who bully them. But SpongeBob is insanely loud, obnoxious and annoying. Why is he so popular then? My mom was reading a magazine article asking readers if they could be friends with any fictional character who would they choose. My mom asked me and suggested Sonic the hedghehog. I said I would befriend Timon...espicialy if I only had one choice. I know Sonic is technicaly older than Timon, but to me he is new. Even though he is just a "cartoon", Timon is alreadly like a friend to me. I had no friends as a kid and he was some sort of imaginary friend. My mom told me that Timon and I would probably get along quite well.

I didn't know Timon was so disliked. I thought him and Pumba were about 70% of the reason I liked that movie. It's easy for me to understand him because he's a social animal who either rejected his society or was rejected by it, and so he lives however he wants to. Rather than be angry and vengeful or apologetic and regretful, he simply moves on. I also liked his carefree attitude because when I saw that movie, I was in my teens and was of the opinion that people made everything way more dramatic than it needed to be.

I think it had to do Nathan Lane's portrayal of him... he was somewhat annoying... endearing but annoying.

I actually had no idea that there was still such a fan base for The Lion King, with forums etc.
Timon wasn't my favorite character, but my favorite part of the movie is the "Hakuna Matata" song. I liked the monkey, Rafiki. He had a good vibe.

I used to hate Rafiki as a kid...manily because he made Simba sneeze as a baby and hit him with his stick. I could never understand the methaphore as a kid and as an adult I just find it stupid. But mostly I hated Rafiki so much as a kid because he was a "creepy little monkey".

I am wondering if I am the only one who can see the irony in this reply.

I have the DVD of The Lion King its one of my favourite animations.
I thought Timon & Pumba were good friends to Simba when they found him.
They were outgoing and I think Simba needed them as well.

I do not know why so many people dislike Timon, but I can tell you why I dislike the character: he is a bad guy. He acts like he is Pumbas best friend, but he is always taking advantage of him and stealing his ideas. He is a very despicable character. Not good at all.

I never knew Timon was hated. I always liked that Stand By Me song and bad things happen to Pumba every time Timon says "stand by me" from One of the Timon and Pumba series.

It was Pumba who I thought was gross, I never hated him, he farted and animals would run from him and caused the grass to fall.

They should watch Meerkat Manor. They'll get a better appreciation for the animal. They're quite fascinating little critters.
I never knew Timon was low on the popularity poll. I always liked Timon and Pumba as a pair when I was a kid.

I've been likened to Timon the Meerkat based on physical resemblance. I've never met a meerkat I didn't like.

I can see what you are saying.

Rafiki had some supernatural powers reminiscent of an African shaman or witch doctor. The one major part he played was to induce a vision in Simba, I suspect he sprinkled Psylobycin dust (a fungus that grows on cattle dung) that Simba inhaled inducing the hallucination of his father Mufasa's face appearing in the storm clouds and talking to him. I think this was an internalized fear that he had failed his father and it was tormenting him. The induced hallucination allowed Simba to defeat his demons and take on Scar and regain his rightful place in the circle of life.

In this respect Rafiki is more than just a creepy monkey.
