How much control over the generally unregulated processes should one exert before it becomes a problem?

As an example, we can use breathing. Generally, it isn't regulated-- it's automatic. When it's considered, it becomes a conscious effort. Concerning pulse, (nor)adrenaline levels, oxytocin levels, enkephalin levels, AVP levels, serotonin levels, and pressure, how much control is too much? [This assumes that I continue associating the pressure/slight pain from poking a fingernail at a designated location on the hand, e.g. thumbnail on second segment of index finger when oxytocin effects increase. I'm not insane enough to actually modify anything by addition or subtraction, what I do seems to be nothing more than a suppression of effects and probably causes as well.]
