It may not be a popular view, but I don't believe in socialized medicine, welfare, or any of the other myriad things the government is expected to provide to citizens. My opinion is that the government should SERVE us by protecting us and regulating business to prevent people from taking unfair advantage of each other. EVERYTHING else should be privatized, and I daresay that if the government took less money from our paychecks and left us the choice we would be more generous in supporting the CHARITIES that would take care of the sick and destitute, etc.

I believe that if we continue to allow the government to take a larger and larger percentage of our hard-earned income, eventually we will get no paycheck. We will get vouchers: one for food, one for housing, one for clothing etc. and so on... AND that those will be given (as in "Atlas Shrugged") "to each according to their need, from each according to their ability" and only the most corrupt individuals will be able to truly get what they need any more.

How would you like it if the government gave you a voucher that was not sufficient to support your needs, yet told you that by their estimation, your needs are not what you know them to be? How would you like it if they told you that you're not working hard enough, and therefore cut your "benefits" even further?

Think it's farfetched? Think again. I can foresee this occurring worldwide within the next 50-100 years...

In theory I would want a government to take care of us all 99% of the time but my guess is human nature and the nature of government makes that impossible. So the next best
thing is for government to provide defense/police/roads.

It sounds good in theory, but in praxis? Most millionaires didn't become millionaires by being nice or through some kind of "fair competition". They took whatever they could get their hands on, because they could.

The problem with that is there is say 5% unemployment chronically in the US perhaps
twice that in Eurpean coutries. So how do you create a 100 % employment economy
without making lots of fundemental wrong choices (USSR had full employment). Its
not possible.

Not only that, but the unemployment rates are calculated based upon those who receive unemployment benefits. There are probably five times that many people unemployed who DO NOT receive those benefits. I've never once qualified for them, and I've never been employed for long.

I don't think 100% employment is practical, as some people will refuse to work while others are simply incapable. I'm still convinced that private charities could care for such individuals much better than the government ever will... but as long as people think that the it's the government's job to do it, they WON'T give to the private charities that COULD do such a great job.

The problem I have with the critical view of "tax & spend" is that most people who support this view generally don't understand American economics. (Completly understandable since you're allowed to graduate from most high schools and some colleges without a single course in enconmics.) It is spending that drives our economy. We have some of the lowest tax rates among industrailized nations. If the government suddenly cut our taxes in half, or worse, cut government spending in half, our ecomony would collaspe. All the things that we enjoy now wouldn't be so cheap and easy to come by. I'm not saying this is right or wrong, I'm saying this is the way it is. 20% of the world's population consuming 80% of the world's resources is probably wrong, but there are no easy answers.

This is an interesting topic, but it should've been posted in the politics, philosophy and religion forum.

I don't mind if the admin. wants to move it... I just posted in "Random Discussion" because it's not about Asperger's.

3 is the circle root of 9.
The square root is 3,000,000,000,900,000,000,000,090,000,000,000,900,000,000,900,900,009,000.5575434687476876546546876846540000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001

Much better than the $3 per gallon we had been paying for a brief period.
