Adverts. Do they annoy you?

Every time I see one it completely baffles me how watching them can make people buy things. It just seems like obvious manipulation (showing someone with little clothes and flashing a product name). Kinda hard to miss.

However I get ads where they tell you about the product and actually give information, that makes sense.

I cannot seem to understand why my NT female friends seem to have their self-esteem impacted negatively by attractive young women in advertisements/commercials/etc.. This seems to be why the adverts work on them i.e. they go out and buy whatever product is being advertised by the scantily clad young women.

I can, however, understand the message being imparted by a Pizza Hut commercial right at dinner time. Presenting images of yummy food when people are likely already hungry is genius marketing in my opinion.

That's true, I often find myself wanting a coke after seeing an add for it, though this is only for products I already know I like (rarely inspires me to buy something new).

I don't understand most adverts. They seem to be full of flashy images nowadays rather than actually plain and simply showing what the product is. Why the hell would the Go Compare guy make you want to use that website? I want to stab the Go Compare guy so bad...

The companies have spent large amounts of money to do studies and hire people whose job it is to find a way to get you to spend money on their product and they seem to succeed at it.

I rarely see commercials. I don't have cable and only watch one show on network tv. I have an ad blocker so I rarely see ads online.

Whats your add blocker? I could use a good one.

And yeah I guess. I just don't understand how seeing people having fun can make someone really want to buy a t-shirt.

AdBlock is a good add-on for most browsers. Google search it.

I like the commercials that are really ridiculous. Like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cc_szUYJAYE

It's just ridiculous, so I think it's funny because it's so over the top. Like that woman stuffing everything in her shirt.

Being hypersocial animals, people go out of their way to do that which society celebrates, and shun that which society condemns. Nor does it matter whether something is right or wrong, good or bad. If people see others doing something, they want to do it too.

The archetypal line about being an individual is the young kid asking his mother for permission to do something crazy. The mother is horrified and says NO! The kid invariably says, "but mom, all the other kids are doing it". Mom retorts: If all the other kids were jumping off bridges, would you jump off too?

Unfortunately, this is supposed to be a rhetorical question, but is not. If all the other kids are jumping off bridges, this kid will do it too. And if all the mothers are jumping off bridges, the mother will do the same.

It's human nature that there are three groups of people: Those who can defy social norms because they have high social status--the trendsetters; those who would rather die than be different--the sheep; and those with low social status who defy social norms--aspies and eccentrics.

Because I definitely fit into the latter category, I find advertising very annoying. I know what I want already, and don't need any suggestions.

This explanation makes complete sense. It would seem I also fall into the latter category...thank goodness.

What I find sad are the commercials where they pretend to be imparting some sort of knowledge, yet are clearly utterly lying - I recall a car commercial (Honda?) where the SUV-type vehicle gets hit by a meteor, then keeps on driving along. Most commercials have some level of fraud in them..

Also sad are the insurance company-type commercials where they show people having a fun time, then suddenly they get hit by a car. Then they tell you, 'get XYZ Insurance'. They're trying to scare people into buying their product. Just sad.

Similarly I saw a car ad where a guy who had a competitors' car found human-flesh-slavering ferret-type creatures in the back seat. If only he had gotten the car they were advertising! Again, sad for the advertisers who think they have to frighten people with the promise of pain unless they buy whatever.

Advertising used to annoy me but I've generally learned to ignore it.. besides that, there's AdBlock, the 'mute' button (which surely was made solely for commercials), and similar technological marvels.

I am not easily swayed by adverts to get something I really don't find much use for or need.

Have come to realize alot of people are though and I've examined the usage of words and tricks. I can remember commercial jingles really well and their phone numbers. Even though I remember the jingles and sing them, it does not make me want to jump up and go get their service or products.

I hate adverts. Most of the time when I watch them I think, "how does this convince people to buy this product? Is everybody but me a complete moron?"
There are countless adverts that irritate me so much that I vow never to buy that product or use that service. So, I'll see the product on a supermarket shelf and it reminds me of the advert and how irritated it makes me. Instead of wanting to buy the product, it makes me feel angry.

That's how it makes me feel. More depressed than angry though that we live in a world that has no mind of its own..
