why do you think clowns are scary?
if you think its because of media then why do you think media portrais clowns as scary?

Because they have a painted face, hiding their true emotions. They can paint on a smile, when their intentions are murderous.

Also because they are part of a hidden world. They are associated with the circus, which used to be more of a 'freak show'. People came to look, poke fun, be astonished, but also be horrified, and be glad when they left again.

That's just my guess anyway.

oh yes I saw this film IT I think clowns are scary because of all the make up you can't see their faces.
puppets and those ventriliquist dolls(not sure if I spelt that right) are freaky as well there was a show called collecters where someone had a whole room full of those things.
Yuk imagine going in that room in the dark.

Not sure about scary but offputting, certainly,

It's a combination of reasons (makeup, loud, unpredictable) but the overriding memory for me is going to the circus with my parents as a child, being expected to find clowns funny, not finding them funny, and feeling pressured into showing a reaction to them I didn't feel.

Yes.

When normal people look at them, they get insight into what it's like to not understand nonverbal cues.

Everyone is a clown to me, due to that inability to understand nonverbal cues.
