The Autistic Dog
Sometimes, I wonder if my dog has Asperger's syndrome. At first, I was joking. Now I'm wondering if it's possible. [Naaaah, I'm still kidding.]
Here is a list of her quirks:
- Tolerates being petted only certain ways, must be able to SEE what's being touched or else she won't stay within petting distance.
- Likes tight spaces, like the area underneath and behind the couch (it's in a corner).
- Won't walk in the mud or snow, or on pillows, blankets, or anything that she might sink into.
- Does not appreciate our other dog trying to herd her, despite showing submissive behavior to her. [Our other dog is a spaniel lab mix.]
- If you turn on certain stations of the radio, she starts pawing at her ears until you turn it off.
- She chews on metal; especially aluminum.
- She will not eat soft dog food, or the orange pieces in her kibble [which are soft]. She'll eat raw vegetables and cooked meat, but she won't eat cooked vegetables or raw meat. [This doesn't stop her from killing birds and small rodents if she catches them, but she'll drag them to us and not eat them.]
- She hates people speaking in Spanish; she'll growl at them until they speak a different language.
- She likes tight spaces, but she hates being trapped. She once pried wooden panels off of a door in the basement in order to escape.
- On the leash, she walks on an angle unless you hold the leash flat and straight over her back.
- She'll let the vet do whatever the he wants...as long as he doesn't make her get on the reflective metal table.
- She's scared of her reflection; or at least she responds to it by lowering her head, sticking her tail between her legs, and backing away slowly.

I miss my dog but she would go all spastic when you first got home and often would propel herself headfirst into you.
The first time I brought her home from the shelter she grabbed my tuna sub lunch off a high counter and woofed it down in two gulps.
She usually decided it was time to go outside to use the facilities as soon as you got nice and comfortable in bed.
Despite running her ragged, I don't think she ever got tired.
No good toy ever lasted more than 10 minutes in her possession since she insisted on taking it apart to see what made it tick.
She was excellent at making me go fetch.
